This step by step diy project is about 16×24 tractor shed plans. If you want to shelter your tractor, your ATV or other agricultural equipment, you should take a look over these loafing shed plans. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Lean to tractor shed plans
Building the base components
The first step of the project is to build the skids for the tractor shed. Build the skids from 4×4 lumber. Make notches to both ends of the skids by using a circular saw. Make 1 3/4″ parallel cuts to the beams and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the surface with sandpaper for a professional result.
Select the right location for the tractor shed, making sure it is perfectly level. Compact a layer of gravel or pour a concrete slat. There are a few options you can choose from, so make sure you check them before taking a decision. Make sure the corners are square, after assembling the skids. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws.
Build the side walls for the tractor shed from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the top plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center and make sure the corners are square. Fit the top plate to the side walls. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the top plates into place.
Assemble the back wall for the tractor shed from 2×4 lumber. Cut all the components at the right dimensions and then lay them down a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center and make sure the corners are square.
Assembling the shed frame
Fit the wall frames to the skids and then align the edges with attention. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the skids. Use a spirit level to plumb the walls vertically. In addition, you need to lock the adjacent walls together tightly by drilling pilot holes and inserting 3 1/2″ screws.
Fitting the back wall siding
Fit the T1-11 siding sheets to the back wall of the shed. Align the edges flush with the wall frame and then insert 6-8d nails, every 8″, so you can lock the panels into place tightly.
Fit the siding sheets to the sides of the tractor shed. Leave no gaps between the sheets and use 6-8d nails to lock them into place tightly.
Build the side top walls from 2×4 lumber. Cut all the components at the right dimensions and shape and then lock everything together tightly with 3 1/2″ screws. Place the studs every 24″ on center for a professional result.
Fitting the back top plate
Fit a piece of 2×4 lumber to the back of the shed. Use 2 1/2″ screws to lock the slat into place.
Fitting the top side walls
Fit the wall frames to the sides of the shed. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the side walls. Use a spirit level to plumb the side top walls.

I’ve been a designer and a woodworker since I first developed consciousness.
Basically a good plan, but due to Covid supply issues, we had to make modifications. It still worked out fine. We couldn’t find 24′ or 18′ lumber anywhere. We lowered the front to 12′ which was adequate for my tractor. We can have strong winds here, so built the walls off of 4 4 x 4 PT corner posts, sunk in concrete, and used skids under the walls to raise off the ground. We used PT 4 x 4 skids, but had to join 8′ lengths as, again, no 16′ or 24 ‘ PT lumber anywhere. We added a center 6 x 6 timber for support in the middle. Rafters were PT 2 x 6 x 8 that I already had. We ran two 8 ‘ supports from side walls to front and back sides of center support and ran two 8 ‘ rafters rather than an 18′ rafter as no 18’ wood anywhere, first one from back to center then center to front. I used metal roofing instead of shingles to reduce weight load on the roof. All in all a nice shed, lots of room for tractor, pickup (a little short), and two riding lawn mowers plus all the lawn tools on one wall. It went together very quickly.

How to build a simple DIY Carport for additional outdoor storage, with basic lumber and scrap materials.
Several years ago we built this large barn-style shed (from a kit), to store tools and equipment. It has worked great, but it’s getting full, and I really wanted to get some extra storage space to use in the winter.
I liked the idea of adding a “Car Port” style garage like the image below, to the side of the shed, for some additional outdoor storage. It would be perfect for bikes, lawnmower’s and other outdoor kinda stuff. If you’re looking for more of a storage locker, check out this one from FamilyHandyMan
Problem: The cost of lumber has gone through the roof due to COVID. It would cost 3-4 times as much to build this now compared to a year ago. Here is a great article from Fortune, if you want to read more about the ridiculous cost of lumber.
Solution: Scavenge the scrap pile.
I collected a bunch of pallets over the last year. Some were made with thin plywood that I usually just cut up for the fireplace. I happen to have a pallet with a 4×6′ piece of ply attached, so, here you have it. How to build an approximately 4×6′ carport out of mostly scrap. I did need to pick up about 40 in dimensional lumber (1×6, 2×4, 2×3) which should have cost around 16, in the before times.
Where to start when building a DIY lawnmower shed?
This project started at the top, and from there I determined where I needed posts, and what level they should be. The only reason for this is because I didn’t have 4×4 posts long enough for the full height. you’ll see my creative solution below.
Step one was to attach a 2×4 header board to the existing shed to support the new roof. I attached this just below the current roofline, low enough that I could tuck the new shingles under the existing ones.
Before attaching my pallet to the header board, I cut some 2×3’s and attached them to each end of the pallet.
- This provides an edge to attach a finished board to on the outside.
- I used these supports to cut an angle for the roof slope. In this case, I went with 15 degrees of slope. Gradual enough that I still get lots of height, but the water still runs off.
Next, I used my ladder and some scrap wood to support the end while I attached my pallet to the header board.
To determine where I needed to put the posts to support the roof, I made a simple pendulum-style marker (plumb bob) using a socket and some string. No need to be perfect here, just pretty close.
I dug a small hole under where I marked each corner, then drove in these metal post supports (something I had leftover from another project) with a sledgehammer. For posts, I had some 4′ sections of 4×4, but that left me short of the roofline.
To make up the difference I made a 2×4 frame and attached it to the top of each post, and the bottom of the roof. To frame in the base I used 2×6 lumber leftover from last years skating rink
Something else I had lying around that was the perfect height is the beautiful cast iron grate from an old bench, that I used as an insert, and to support the roof.
At this point the basic structure is complete. All that’s left is to box it in a bit and make it pretty.
To box in the structure, I used a scrap sheet of particleboard and plywood for the back and side. To fill in the 16″ or so I was short on the side, I used cut-up pallet boards.
I used double black shingles for the roof. Not quite the same but close enough of a match that it’s not noticeable compared to the original shingles.
Tips for laying shingles
Lay the first-course upside down so the slits in the shingles face up toward the roof peak. Lay the second row of shingles on top of the first one. This gives you a nice strong drip lip and a nice straight line to start with.
Do I need underlay or roofing felt under shingles?
Underlay is not necessary for sheds or carports, in fact many local building codes don’t even require it for housing anymore. Use your best judgement based on how wet your area is, and what you are protecting.
To make my new carport match the shed, I used 1×6 to frame off the roof, and box in the posts. This gave me a nice chunky-looking post and roof “beam” and a great surface to stain.

The roof support, posts, and pallet boards received 3 coats of stain, and the plywood and particle board received 2 coats of exterior latex paint. Plywood and Particleboard typically don’t like water, so the latex paint should seal it better and hopefully make it last longer.

Finishing off the esthetics, I dug out a section in front of my carport, and put some garden bed trim in. Then filled it all in with 3/4″ crushed gravel, like a little driveway.
My lawnmower just barely fits in, but it does the job, and now I can store all the bikes in here over the winter.

Tough call in todays market. Lumber costs are soaring, but usually you can save a bit of money building your own shed, however a shed kit like the big one in this post was really easy to put together, and came with most of what we needed, so paying a little more to save all the frustration is well worth it in my opinion

Lawn Mower Storage Ideas
Storing a lawn mower has several nuances. First, we need to examine the type of lawn and be realistic. If you have a massive zero-turn mower, this thing is going to need its own garage space or at the very least a well-protected carport. Many zero-turn mowers can be up to five feet across – and those are just the blades. You won’t find a good outdoor location for this and will want to keep it well protected from the elements. Most sheds won’t do either. Landscapers can get by with keeping them on the backs of trailers during the summer, but these need dedicated indoor space during the winter.
Lawn tractors have similar requirements, but can sometimes be stored between cars in a well-spaced out garage. Many folks with large yards also have a lot of garage space and can make use of it for stashing a 3 foot wide mower.
Push mowers are the trickiest. With smaller yards come fewer places to store things. But let’s see what we can do.
Best Place To Store A Lawn Mower
Hands down, the best place to store a lawn mower is in the garage. The garage offers a decently insulated, dry area for storage. While it’s a total luxury, it hands down will be the best way to keep your mower from rusting, fading, or exposing the plastic parts to extreme temperature volatility that would result in cracks.
Personally, I have mine in the garage in the back corner and pull my truck a few inches away from it each time. It is a tight squeeze, but I make it work to keep the mower protected.
If you don’t have the space for a mower to take up a portion of your garage, think again. There are many mowers these days (battery-powered) that allow for you to fold the mower in half and have it in a much smaller space in your garage.
The fact of the matter is that this will still take up at least 20-24 inches of width, with somewhere between 12-16 inches of length.
If you don’t have the space, then let’s move outdoors.
Best Shed for Lawn Mowers
If you don’t have a garage, your next best location to store a lawn mower is in a shed. If you have one already, great. If not, we can help out. Here’s what to look for in a shed for storing lawn mowers.
- You want your shed to be able to keep out most of the elements. While it won’t do much to protect against temperature, having one that is waterproof will really help prevent rusting. It’s also important to keep the shed close to your house, in a shaded location. This will allow it to stay somewhat protected from the elements and keep it relatively cool.

We found a lawn mower shed that has all the things you’re looking for. I did some annoyingly extensive research on sheds (you’d be surprised) and found one on Amazon that comes at a pretty great price point and has all the things I’ve mentioned.

It comes in a ton of configurations, but honestly the 5 ft by 2 ft version will work for basically all push mowers. I’d say 95% of push mowers are below 22 inches, so the 2 ft version can easily accommodate them without taking up too much space.

- It’s in the name. Has a pretty dang durable outer surface that provides serious protection but is also thin enough to not be bulky.
- Not just to weather, but looks really durable and will avoid scratches. The big bad wolf will likely not be able to blow this house down.

Best Place to Store Mower Outdoors
Okay – you don’t have a garage and a shed is out of the question right now – what do you do?
You still have options. Depending on where you live, you might be able to get away with outdoor storage as a temporary solution.
If you have to store your lawn mower outdoors, consider these things:
- Try to keep it dry
- Keep your lawn mower dry at all costs. Not only can you avoid rust, but also avoid water building up in places that it shouldn’t be.
- Tuck it close to your house, underneath your deck, on top of a patio, whatever – but make sure to keep it dry.
- Additionally (or alternatively), throw a tarp over that sucker. Obviously it doesn’t have to be big, but something to keep it from getting directly drenched will help.
- Try to keep it shaded
- Heat can do silly things to equipment – causing plastic parts to expand, the color to deteriorate, and overall wear down your mower.
- You can use the same methods of keeping it dry to keep it shaded.
- Keep it in a non-grassy area
- Sounds counterintuitive since the mower is used to being in the grass, but giving the blades some breathing room can help keep the blades sharpened and also prevent rusting.
- Move it onto a gravel or mulch section where something is not making constant contact with the blades.

Alternative Storage Ideas for Lawn Mowers
Okay, we’ve got some outside of the box and new ways to store lawn mowers that don’t involve garages, sheds, or the great outdoors.
We are talking about the great indoors.
A lot of these electric mowers nowadays can fold in half like a dang lawn chair and weigh under 50 lbs.
No, you may not want to store it inside all the time, but during the winter – definitely.
- Give it a nice and complete spray down. Not only do you want to get rid of any bugs, but you want to get all the caked on grass completely off of the blades of the mower.
- Hand dry the blades quickly after to prevent rusting (be careful).
- Fold it in half.
- Bring it inside for the winter.
