There’s some reduction because of the increase in mass, but not as much as when it combines with the increased air resistance of thicker lines. It’s the line we prefer on our gas trimmers and with cordless models being as capable as they are today, we’re able to on those as well.

DeWALT sports an impressive 17-inch cutting swath on its latest 60V Max brushless string trimmer. It’s a 2-speed attachment-capable trimmer using a universal connection system, opening up more options beyond DeWALT attachments. With 5800 RPM on the top end (4650 in low), there’s plenty of speed and you can swap out the 0.080-inch line that comes pre-spooled with 0.095-inch.

It’s a little beefier than some models with the 3.0Ah 60V battery pushing the total weight over 11 pounds. The trigger grip section is also a bit thicker than most, so you might not care for it if you have smaller hands. Though not part of the M18 Fuel system, it is brushless and compatible with all of Milwaukee’s M18 batteries. This 2-speed model features a 14 – 16-inch cutting swath that cut very confidently in our tests. What sends it over the top is the value proposition. It’s under 200 as a kit and it comes with a 6.0Ah High Output battery that retails for 179 if you bought it by itself. If you’re a fan of Milwaukee tools, this is a great entry into its OPE line.

It also comes in both standard and bike handle models, giving you a great option for clearing large areas.

Toro’s 60V 51830 is the top performer for the Flex Force line. Its brushless motor offers an excellent 16-inch cutting swath and a well-balanced design. While it doesn’t have some of the cutting-edge features that some of the other models do, we don’t have any complaints. It’s an excellent all-around option that keeps its price reasonable.

Best Battery-Powered String Trimmer Buying Guide: What We Look For

Cutting Power

Three primary factors go into cutting power: line speed, line thickness/mass, and motor torque.

The faster the line whips around, the better the tips cut grass. Most battery-powered string trimmers are fine in this category. As long as you’re getting at least 5000 RPM, you should be in good shape. The top models are capable of hitting 6500 RPM and there is a significant difference in how fast you can complete your trimming duties at higher rotational speeds.

Shifting the FOCUS to the line thickness, the higher the line mass, the more force it’s able to cut through thicker grass with. It’s like the difference between getting hit by a 175-pound safety and a 225-pound linebacker at the same speed. mass equals more cutting power.

Most cordless string trimmers take 0.080-inch line at a minimum. We recommend 0.095-inch for the best all-around performance. If you have tougher grass or deal with overgrowth frequently, a string trimmer with 0.105-inch line lets you power through even better. Just keep in mind that line diameter has a direct effect on runtime—thicker line takes more power to run.

Finally, a motor with higher torque helps the trimmer resist slowing down as the going gets tougher. Even though trimming grass seems like a low-demand task, grass does push back against the line, causing it to bend back and eventually start to bog the motor. Higher torque holds keeps the head spinning better in tough cutting situations, even when its highest RPMs are lower than low-torque gearing.

Cutting Swath

Having a large cutting swath helps you clear large areas faster or gives you a more generous border for your mower. You need more power to run wider, though, and runtime is always a consideration. That said, in the past couple of years, we’ve seen the technology come together to give us solid options. Look for a 15-inch cutting diameter for most situations. Recent 16- and 17-inch models are a great choice when you have larger areas to cut.

Runtime

The average homeowner on a 1/4-acre lot only needs about 15 minutes of consistent trigger time to cover trimming. Most cordless string trimmers are able to hit that at high speed without too much trouble.

Professional lawn care crews need much more, though. So do homeowners with large properties and farm/ranch acreage.

If your runtime needs are greater, look for a string trimmer that balances the efficiency of a brushless motor, uses 0.095-inch line, and possibly comes with a higher-capacity battery. Of course, you can always carry multiple batteries.

Also, consider learning how to trim at low speed when the grass isn’t as thick. Even though you have to slow down a bit, you’ll cut a significantly larger area.

Vibration

We highly value low-vibration string trimmers. We already have enough work to do managing the weight of such a long tool without vibration adding additional fatigue. The harmonics in some of today’s models are so good that hardly any vibration makes it up the handle… and they are a joy to use!

Weight and Balance

If you’re working all day on a lawn crew or even just putting the finishing touches on your own lawn, you want the lightest weight you can get without sacrificing the power you need. Bare weight isn’t everything—the battery can add a lot. If you can get a fully-loaded battery-powered string trimmer that meets your performance needs and comes in under 10 pounds, that’s a big win.

Balance is a consideration and the trimmers that have the best typically mount the motor on the trimmer head to counter the battery weight on the back. Many models also let you adjust the front handle to help dial in your fit.

If you’re after an attachment-capable model, you’re stuck with the motor in the back, and the balance shifts back. For those trimmers that are simply heavier by nature, consider adding a shoulder strap to help you out.

Sound Level

Low noise is one of the major benefits of moving away from gas power. Cordless string trimmers we’ve tested range from decibels in the low 80s to the upper 90s (measured at our operator’s ear). Even at the top end, it’s an improvement over the majority of gas trimmers.

Your line selection plays a bigger part than it does on gas trimmers. Sometimes, switching the line you use can reduce the overall noise level or change the tone to a less irritating pitch.

Line Changes

When you have to change the line, it can be an easy or frustrating process. Manual loading is largely a thing of the past, though some trimmers still have manual heads. To make the process easier, look for models that have some type of fast-loading system (SpeedFeed, Rapid Load, etc). With these, you thread the line through the head to the middle, turn the head to load it, and go get on with the work.

Regardless of what comes on the trimmer, you can upgrade most to a quick-load head.

The best on the market right now is EGO’s PowerLoad design. It takes the fast-load concept and adds automatic winding and gives us the easiest, quickest line changes we’ve ever had.

Attachment Capability

Pro lawn crews typically have dedicated machines for string trimming, edging, and hedge trimming, but homeowners can save a lot of money by using interchangeable heads and tools that cover everything from blowing to brush cutting.

As we mentioned earlier, attachment systems require a top-mounted motor that affects the balance. It’s a trade-off you have to make for the convenience you gain.

One thing to keep an eye on is the attachment connection style. Models with a “universal” connection can use attachments from other brands, opening up far more choices. Recent multi-head systems including EGO, Milwaukee, and STIHL aren’t compatible with others, so you need to make sure they have everything you need before investing.

As many of you know, I am a sole owner household, so what gets done around these parts (or lack thereof) is done by me. One rather big hurdle for me personally lately is yard upkeep. Is it just me or is yard work better geared for the younger crowd?!

Perhaps it’s finally realizing I’m not in my 20s any longer. I don’t really know what it is, but one thing I do know, I had thrown my weed trimmer to the curb until this one came along.

I was using the Weedeater Featherlite for years. I still in fact have it! But when my one cutting cord wonder died, I bought another. Only… now they make them with two cutting cords.

Let me just say, the two stringer is sitting brand new on my workbench used only once. I can’t start it, and can’t stand fussing with the more technical cord stringing. Done! I’m totally over it.

So I resigned to just do without a weed trimmer and pull the grass by hand.

I did this over the course of several weeks, and felt really enlightened I no longer had to fight that silly machine, when I spotted my neighbour through the weeds and proudly chortled, “I am so weed eater free! Yep! Happy to be pulling by hand these days…”

“Oh, I LOVE my weed trimmer!” stated Janette.

What? When did this happen? I remember them having a big heavy lug that made you shake like a jack hammer after the fact.

“What are you even talking about? You hate weed trimming!”

“Not since I got my battery operated one!” “It’s soooo light! It doesn’t need any pulling to start, just flick a switch. And the battery lasts for my entire yard and then some. AND… my hands don’t shake afterwards at all! Hang on a minute and I’ll show it to you…”

I lifted it up and it felt like a feather. And perhaps even. dare I say it… toy-ish?

“Sure!” Well I’ll be. Back to the one cutting cord thing once again. I was nearly sold at that point.

So I proceeded to crack that little whip on my entire yard in minutes. With a half used battery. My goodness… this battery powered weed eater was so light, it was like I just walked around with a broom in my hands.

And get this… no grass even landed back on my legs. Don’t you hate it when you turn into a walking grass creature after the fact?

Ecstatic, I then put that thing on my shopping list pronto and finally picked up my own!

It does not have the wheel, but there are some that do.

It only came with one battery which lasts a long time. I nearly purchased a 2nd, however they are as much as the trimmer. No point! Just get another trimmer if you want another battery. (so silly isn’t it?)

This is a light duty edger, perfect for a typically kept up regular sized suburban type yard. It would not be tough enough for say…acreag e needing to hack down blackberries

Easy to assemble

Oh I don’t love assembling stuff. But I made myself drag out the directions so I could figure out how to snap the protection cover on, then screw it in. VERY simple. When you read directions…

The (single) cutting cord was already installed, so I purchased an extra.

Weed trimmer and flower bed edger-in-one!

I like to trim along cut turf edges and sidewalks, however I always had to hold my old weed eater upside down in order to do edging.

For this unit, the handle loosens, allowing you to spin the head so the cutting part swings backwards.

And it was so nice not to have to play a lawn version of Twister for a change in order to do it! Lovely clean cuts along the sidewalks here I come!

Janette’s had a wheel so you could roll the head while edging. I found when I used hers, I didn’t use the wheel.

So when I purchased mine without the wheel (by mistake), I didn’t worry about it.

But it is a neat feature to watch out for.

I said I was thrilled to not have to use an automatic weed trimmer.

But what I really meant was a GAS run one. Because I am VERY thrilled to run this battery operated variety! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

Advantages of a High-Power Cordless Trimmer and Edger

I’ll start out by telling you why I favor cordless electric trimmer/edgers in general, and then move along to give my opinions of the Worx WG184 specifically.

A battery-operated weed eater makes sense for people who are aiming to complete a specific type of lawn work. If you just want to slice weeds that are encroaching on the edges of your lawn or walkways, this type of equipment is an appropriate choice.

It eliminates the need for long extension cords which are required for the plug-in models, and you can dispense with the noise and fumes associated with gas-powered trimmers, too.

But there are certain situations where trimmer/edgers really won’t advance your progress at all, even if they’re powered by gasoline or attached to cords. So before we go any further, I want to spell out a few things about weed eaters.

They’re trimmers, not bushwackers. The idea is to use them for repetitive or hard to reach weeding chores.

A few examples of what the WG184 can accomplish include clearing crabgrass that constantly reappears in the driveway, tidying the edges of ivy or other creeping landscape plants, weed-whacking the tender ground covers that mound up a modest hillside, or cutting the liriope back in spring when it’s threatening to take over the whole yard.

I’m sorry if this is going to burst your bubble, but that’s all, folks. You’ll quickly destroy a trimmer by trying to use it for hardcore jobs like clearing brush from a gulley or cutting scrub from a quarter-acre that hasn’t been mown for years.

Nor should you use these types of tools to cut thorny canes, dry tree branches, entire lawns that are larger than 100 or so square feet, or overgrown vegetable gardens at the end of the season.

As my husband relayed to me based on decades of experience, a tool like the WG184 might survive one of those jobs, but the duress would run through the battery charge really quickly and use up spool after spool of weed eater line.

Trimmer/edgers are built for keeping the edges of the lawn tidy, and weeding spaces where you would be spending hours on your hands and knees and returning to do it again next week if you weren’t using a weed eater.

They aren’t for clearing lots – yours or your neighbor’s.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the key features that set this model apart from the competition.

Key Features

I want to start by mentioning that Worx has a good thing going with its Power Share line.

This collection of more than 75 models of lawn equipment and power tools can all be powered by the same Worx batteries, be they 20-, 40-, or 80-volt.

This value-add can give you more range for using any number of tools longer before returning to the house for recharging. It also allows you to buy this or other models without springing for new batteries if you already use them to power another piece of equipment.

Like most lithium ion batteries, you can anticipate that the two that come with the WG184 will last two or three years before they won’t recharge anymore and you’ll have to purchase new ones.

You can buy replacement batteries direct from the manufacturer or via Amazon.

Another helpful feature is the dual charger that you may receive with your purchase or buy separately.

It has a function available for charging a single battery, but it’s best to charge both at once since the power turns off if either battery runs down – they operate together as a unit in this trimmer.

If you plan to charge the batteries outdoors, note that this charger works only at temperatures between 32 and 110°F. It stops immediately and flashes red once the temperature exceeds or falls below that range.

Indicator lights on the charger flash green while charging is in progress, rest on green when the batteries reach 100 percent, or flash red to indicate that one or both batteries are defective.

With the two 20-volt batteries working in tandem to deliver 40 volts of power, this particular weed eater is more powerful in comparison to other smaller electric cordless versions available today, in some cases twice as much.

That translates to longer sessions between recharging, as well as boosted performance within larger areas or when dealing with taller weeds.

The WG184 runs for 20 to 30 minutes on a single charge, which the manufacturer considers ample time to trim or weed-eat the edges of a half-acre property.

It’s pretty easy to be safe with this model, too.

It features a two-stage start, so a “lock off” button keeps the tool from starting unless you first press the lock off button and then pull the trigger that starts the action.

The 13-inch safety guard attaches near the business end of the trimmer and prevents debris from flying up to injure the operator. It also covers a blade that keeps the weed eater string to a certain length.

If it gets too long, the blade cuts the end off before the line begins to strain the motor.

The included spool of copolymer nylon resin and synthetic weed eater string is another handy feature, and it’s considered pro grade.

The spool is already wound and you simply click it into place after opening the chamber with a push button.

The shape of the spool is designed to minimize drag so the WG184 can make cuts more effectively, which also promotes longer battery life during operation.

You can purchase replacement spools with 20 feet of line at Home Depot or two-packs of spools for a total of 40 feet of line from Amazon.

Its push button Command Feed spool system is another innovative bit of technology you’ll see on the WG184. This proprietary feature is one of my husband’s favorites.

It allows you to feed more line merely by pressing a button.

You do this while the machine is running until you hear a clattering sound that indicates the line is being cut to the proper length.

The WG184 will safely halt the mower when the feed is engaged, and then restart once the line has been cut and is in place for more trimming or edging.

When assembled and fully loaded with batteries, the WG184 weighs 8.6 pounds and is 65.77 inches long by 13.75 inches wide by 9 inches high at the housing.

While it’s not as light as some of the other Power Share power tools manufactured by Worx, most users will be able to lift it readily. I found I started getting tired of holding the trimmer only towards the end of my first 20-minute weed eating session, and I’m not able to lift more than 40 pounds at a go.

A D-grip handle is another ergonomic feature of this model. You can use it to position the trimmer so you can hold it long enough to complete the task at hand.

A pivoting head allows you to trim and edge on uneven terrain, like you might find alongside certain driveways. To change the angle of the head, you put your foot on the safety guard and pull up or down on the shaft to position the head at the desired angle.

The WG184 also includes a set of detachable edger wheels. They clip on to the main rod of the trimmer easily, making it possible to stand upright and cut a straight edge while you roll the trimmer down a hard surface next to the vegetation you’re trimming.

I’ve left the most fun feature for last. This edger includes a variable speed throttle.

You can press the trigger to increase the speed when you’re faced with a rougher patch, and then release it bit by bit to decelerate and preserve battery power.

That’s a fun activity, and you may find yourself indulging in unnecessary revving the first couple times you use the WG184. I know I did!

Pros and Cons

For my money, the main benefits of the WG184 include its ergonomic features, its relatively long-lasting batteries, its safety features, and the technology that allows you to feed more line using only a push button.

I also value the safety features, including the two-step starter and the safety guard. And I appreciate the two-year warranty that can be extended to three years by registering online within 30 days of purchase.

The only two potential drawbacks I found are not a big deal. The first pertains to where the motor is located.

Having it installed at the end of the trimmer that reaches the vegetation, instead of near the handle, makes it just a wee bit harder to control the motion you use to swipe the trimmer back and forth.

If this was a big, heavy, gas-powered trimmer and edger, it would be impossible to maneuver if the motor was close to the ground like that. But since this model weighs less than nine pounds, it’s not much of an issue.

Also, that extensive, 13-inch safety guard enhances the reach of the WG184, allowing it to cut in a 13-inch circle without tossing debris into the air.

But this can also make it hard to see what you’re trying to cut, since it covers so much area.

Again, I’m willing to live with the obscured view for safety’s sake, but it can be a drawback if you can’t remember to first carefully determine where you’re cutting and how much power you’ll need from that fabulous throttle ahead of activating the tool.

Extra Oomph from a Battery-Powered Trimmer/Edger

As someone who thoroughly enjoys helping with the yardwork but who can’t lift heavy equipment or contend with gas fumes, I really appreciate getting to use this WG184 to weed-eat the small jobs without a lot of hassle.

It helps me to be more independent, sure, but it’s also gratifying to watch it make a clean cut along the ragged edges near our walks and driveway, or beneath the Knock Out rose bushes where the mower can’t reach.

And I don’t have to wait for assistance with minor edging and trimming chores, which eliminates a common source of frustration.

My favorite feature is the ease with which you initially assemble the edger using just your hands and a Phillips head screwdriver. One screw? I’ve got this!

I also value the push-button ease of engaging the automatic feed on the spool system.

My husband will still be using bigger gas-powered models in his lawn care business, but he also loves having this lighter, more environmentally-friendly weed eater to use for the smaller jobs at our house.

And he surprised me by being the one to note how lovely it is to trim the edges of the lawn without the usual uproar from a gas-powered motor. “We can even have a conversation while we work,” he added.
