Battery-Operated Lawn Tools: Is electric lawn care equipment worth it. Commercial…
Lawn Care
Because many conventional gas and diesel lawn mowers do not have strong emission controls, they are widely recognized as a major source of smog-forming air pollution. In fact, a 6HP diesel or gas mower running for an hour creates the equivalent emissions of driving your car 160 miles. (source)
Not only do old-fashioned lawn mowers burn fossil fuels, they also create ground-level ozone and haze. And, an estimated 17 million gallons of gas is spilled each year as we refuel the mowers, which can pollute drinking water.

Battery-Operated Lawn Tools: Is electric lawn care equipment worth it?
Once upon a time, the only electric lawn equipment we had access to, was plugged into a wall.
Which was not only inconvenient but also dangerous.
Nowadays, battery-powered lawn care tools are available for everything from lawnmowers, to chainsaws and leaf blowers.
But is battery-powered equipment worth investing in? Or is it a gimmick?
Below you will find everything you need to know about lawn care with battery-powered tools.

What do lawn care pros say about battery-powered equipment?
We wanted to know what lawn care pros thought about battery-powered equipment in commercial applications.
So we asked them!
And what we found is the overwhelming majority of lawn care professionals (64.5%) said that battery-powered lawn care equipment had some practical commercial applications.
The most commonly cited tool used by lawn care pros is battery-powered hedge trimmers. Battery-powered leaf blowers and weed-eaters were also cited as a good way to quickly and quietly finish a small job.
But the overwhelming consensus is that nothing beats gas-powered equipment overall.
While 34.5% said they can not stand using battery-powered equipment when it comes to their lawn care business.
Only 1% of the lawn care pros we polled said they “love” battery-powered equipment.
Battery-Powered Equipment: Professional vs. Homeowner
Here’s the deal, battery-powered equipment has come a long way and is more than suitable for most homeowners.
Whether you are talking about a battery-powered leaf blower, chainsaw, or lawn mower. Battery-powered equipment is truly up to par as compared to gas equipment for the average homeowner.
However, there are certain limitations that battery-powered equipment is subject to that limit its value in most commercial applications, as well as for “professional homeowners”.
Pros and Cons of Battery-powered Equipment
Here’s the deal, whatever your preconceived notions about electric power are, there are pros and cons to using battery-powered equipment. And to know whether or not battery-powered equipment is worthwhile, we need to look into the pros and cons of using them.

Benefits of Battery-powered Equipment:
There are so many positives to owning and operating a battery-powered lawn mower or weed whacker.
Those benefits include:
- Less mess (no spilled gasoline or oil to manage),
- Near silent operation,
- No smells,
- Great for small residential neighborhoods.
Think about it, despite the severe limitations of battery-powered lawn care equipment. In certain applications, such as small residential neighborhoods. Battery-powered lawn equipment can be less disruptive to the neighborhood.
Which can make your neighbors happy if you are a homeowner, or give you an edge on the competition if you use the quiet nature of battery-powered equipment as a selling point. And you won’t have to worry about whether you will need to use a fuel stabilizer or not.

Cons of Battery Powered Equipment.
Now for the limitations. Here’s the deal, no matter what improvements are made to battery-powered equipment, there will be limitations.
The cons of battery-powered equipment include:
- Energy is limited to battery storage,
- There are limitations to the power a battery can produce,
- Requires power source.
The biggest downside to battery-operated equipment is the limitations on the run time of the equipment. Gas-powered engines can theoretically run indefinitely as long as fuel is available.
But a battery-powered machine requires access to a power outlet, and unless you have extra batteries while the one charges. You are going to have downtime.
Which for the average homeowner, isn’t really a problem. But if you are operating a commercial lawn care company, or are regularly doing yardwork. It may be a limitation you don’t want to deal with.

Who is battery-powered lawn care equipment for?
Look, it’s not really about whether battery-powered equipment it’s not really about whether it’s worth it or not. Its about who is it for?
Who are battery-powered lawn mowers for?
In short, battery-powered lawn mowers are for the average homeowner who lives on a ½ acre or less of land. While some more expensive models like the RYOBI 38 Inch can cut up to 2 acres on one charge.
But battery-powered lawn mowers won’t really serve in most commercial applications, though there are commercial battery-operated mowers nowadays.
Who is other battery-powered lawn equipment for?
Other battery-powered equipment on the other hand can serve a wider range of people. For example, battery-powered leaf blowers can be great for almost anyone, even lawn care professionals. However, when it comes to fall leaf clean-up, battery-powered equipment may not always be practical in commercial applications.
Hedge trimmers and weed whackers that are powered by batteries can be great even in commercial applications. Assuming the property you are working on has been maintained regularly.
On the other hand, for example, if you need to clear brush on a half-acre, a battery-powered weed whacker or lawn mower may not “make the cut”. Commercial companies may find it useful to market their company on as an all-electric lawn care company in densely populated neighborhoods.

Battery Powered Lawn Care Equipment At the End of the Day
At the end of the day, battery-powered lawn care equipment is great for regular maintenance on most properties. And it is improving constantly. In fact, many argue that battery technology is the next step in the evolution of the lawn mower.
However, when things get overgrown or are not managed regularly, battery-powered equipment may not be up to the task.
That being said, battery-powered equipment has come a long way. And it truly serves a wide range of purposes. Best of all you will have less to do when it comes time to winterize your lawn care equipment.

Does John Deere Make an Electric Riding Lawn Mower?
Interest in electric vehicles has continued to increase over recent years. With more people interested in “going green” and reducing their carbon footprint, John Deere is joining the electric revolution and offering their first fully electric residential lawn mower, available for purchase in 2023. Continue reading to learn more about John Deere’s new electric riding lawn mower and what it has to offer your property.
What electric riding mower models are available from John Deere?
John Deere is adding to their well-known residential line of ZTrak mowers with the Z370R Electric ZTrak This is a residential-size, zero-turn mower. While John Deere has plans to offer a full line of battery-powered residential lawn mowers, the Z370R Electric is the first to be released. Keep an eye out, as more models will be available in the future.
How does the electric mower work?
The Z370R Electric mower works and offers the same performance you’ve come to expect from John Deere’s lawn mowers, except it is powered by a 3.2-kWh (3.56 kWh maximum) sealed lithium-ion battery. Charge your mower by plugging a standard extension cord into a 110-volt grounded outlet. The battery does not need to be removed from the mower to charge, and there is no special charger to purchase. Once your mower is fully charged, you are ready to go.
What kind of power does an electric mower offer?
The electric Z370R ZTrak offers excellent power to mow your lawn efficiently. The 58 Volt lithium-ion battery operates a dual electric motor transmission that provides enough power to mow up to 2 acres with a full charge. With forward speeds up to 7 mph and reverse speeds up to 3.5 mph, you can mow your lawn at the same speeds as a gas-powered mower.
What maintenance does an electric mower require?
John Deere electric mowers might not have oil or filter change needs, but they still require some maintenance to keep them in proper working condition and increase their lifespan.
Battery maintenance – Since a lithium-ion battery powers the mower, it is crucial to keep it charged after each use and store it in a cool, dry place.
Electrical connections – Electric mowers include multiple electrical connections. Routinely check that your connections are secure and show no signs of corrosion.
Moving parts – Even though there are fewer moving parts on an electrical mower than on a gas-powered mower, it is important to keep them lubricated for proper operation. Prevent wear and tear by routinely lubricating axles, wheels, and other moving parts.
Blades – Your blades are the most important piece for a clean-cut lawn. Check your mower blades and sharpen them as needed. If your blades are dull, you risk damaging your grass and increasing your chance of disease.
As always, be sure to follow specific maintenance instructions included in your Operator’s Manual.
What are the pros and cons of an electric mower?
With any purchase, it is important to consider the pros and cons before making your final decision. Fully electric riding lawn mowers are the ideal solution for some properties, but not all.
Pros
Quiet operation – Electric mowers offer more silent operation than gas-powered mowers. The quieter operation makes them ideal for residential areas, as you will be less likely to disturb your neighbors. If you want to mow early in the morning without waking people up, this is an ideal feature.
Easy start – Electric mowers are quick and easy to start, with no manual choke.
Low maintenance – Electric mowers do not need gas or oil, meaning less maintenance than gas-powered lawn mowers. Without gas or oil, there is no need to change the oil or replace fuel and oil filters.
Cost-effective – Electric mowers are cheaper to maintain and operate in the long run due to fewer maintenance requirements.
Environmentally friendly – If lowering your carbon footprint is important to you, an electric lawn mower can help. Electric mowers are powered by batteries that do not emit harmful gases like gas-powered lawn mowers.
Cons
Initial cost – While cheaper to maintain in the long run, electric mowers are more expensive than gas-powered mowers when first purchased. An electric lawn mower is an investment in the beginning and might not be a feasible option for some.
Charging time – The lithium-ion batteries take several hours to charge and power your electric lawn mower fully, so it is important to always plan when you would like to mow so your battery can be fully charged.
Operating time – A fully charged battery only offers power for so long. If you have a large area to cover, your limited battery life might require recharging before you can complete mowing.
Limited availability – Electric lawn mowers are newer to the scene and not mass-produced yet like gas-powered mowers, making them not as easy to find and purchase. Finding accessories and replacement parts can be difficult as well.
Where can I find more information about purchasing the new John Deere electric mower?
Currently, the John Deere Z370R Electric mower is only available for purchase online. If you want to learn more or purchase the new electric residential riding mower, contact your trained Sales Specialist at your local Koenig Equipment.
Toro Revolution Electric Battery-Powered Zero Turn Lawn Mowers

The Toro Revolution Battery-Powered Zero Turn Lawn Mowers include three primary models. They include the Toro Grandstand Revolution stand-on mower, the Z Master Revolution zero-turn, and the 60V Toro HD 21 Revolution push mower. These mowers fall squarely on the commercial business side of the industry with performance, run-time, and pricing to match.
What Toro Revolution Electric Mowers Offer
Increasingly, local municipalities continue to pass laws mandating OPE equipment perform with lower noise emissions. These municipal noise restrictions have forced many commercial landscapers and lawn care professionals to consider battery-powered products for their business—if not in whole, then in part.
Toro Revolution Series electric mowers deliver on the all-day runtime needed in order to achieve commercial-level operation and expectations. Their extra-large batteries and commercial-level decks ensure that professionals have another option when looking to supplement or switch over to electric.
Toro Revolution Mower Technology
We think Toro did a few really great things with the Revolution Series electric mowers. For one, they minimized components through the use of brushless motors and removing the need for hydrostatic wheel controls. That should translate into less maintenance compared to a gasoline engine and standard transmission. Next, they mounted the battery packs as low as possible on these mowers to drop the center of gravity and help them perform more confidently on all manner of lawns—including hilly terrain.
The battery packs of the HyperCell Power System used in the Grandstand mower, for example, feature 135 cells per pack (they appear to be 21700 cells). Each pack stores and delivers roughly 2337.5Wh of energy. Multiply that by the 8 battery packs that fit within the Toro Grandstand zero-turn mower, and you have somewhere around 18.7 kilowatt-hours of available power! That’s roughly the equivalent of 18 STIHL AR 3000 backpack batteries and should give you all-day mowing capability unless you only mow uphill.

It goes without saying that the Toro Revolution Series mowers have incredibly robust battery systems. In fact, here’s how some of the key features compare:

The controls on the Z Master Revolution include hard buttons—eliminating issues with trying to use touch controls while wearing gloves. We love this and think all mowers should get away from touchscreen interfaces. They have no place on mowers. Using the Horizon interface, you can control blade tip speed and maximum drive speed. Toro also lets you see the remaining battery charge and other helpful info.

An adjustable deck rake gives you a pro feature that also helps increase runtime by letting more grass clippings exit the rear of the deck while mulching. You can also adjust the rake to optimize cutting performance.
Between the battery and brushless motors on this electric mower, Toro claims you get the equivalent of a 38hp engine. That should be enough to tackle even overgrown grass, though regular maintenance cuts will yield you the longest overall run times.

With three available models, expect to pay 35,000 for the 48-inch model and even more for the 52-inch, 60-inch, and premium 60-inch model with MyRide suspension.

Toro Grandstand Revolution Stand-on Mower
The Toro Grandstand Revolution Stand-on Mower isn’t the first battery-powered stand-on in the market. It does, however, offer some unique features worth looking into. Toro built this electric stand-on mower on the same commercial platform as their gas-powered GrandStand series.

The mowers feature the same strong I-beam front end and 7-gauge steel deck with bullnose bumper.

Like the Z Master, the GrandStand Revolution lets you adjust the deck rake to compensate for various mowing conditions. Instead of the 10 batteries of the Z Master, this machine uses 8 Toro HyperCell batteries totaling 18.7 kWh of power. It delivers up to 7 hours or more of runtime with a maximum speed of 10 mph.

Specifications
- Model: 18560

Final Thoughts
Clearly, these electric mowers from Toro offer professional quality. They also, however, offer themselves at a professional-level price. Starting around 35,000, the Toro Z Master and Grandstand Revolution mowers aren’t for the faint of wallet. While you can certainly make the case for an eventual ROI, our calculations put that around 4-5 years. That corresponds to the time when you may need a replacement battery. Unfortunately, the battery can make up half the price of the original mower.
We can’t help but think the future of commercial battery-powered lawn mowers will fall to the leasing market. It makes too much sense and eliminates the issue of long-term ROI based on uncertainties like ongoing run-time and battery replacement.
