Battery AH Explained The best way to describe battery amp hour is that this is effectively the size of your fuel tank, the more amp hours your battery has then the longer the battery will last between charges. amp hours does not increase the power of a given tool.

As with cars though a bigger engine does not always translate to better performance so it is important to compare the specifications of tools at different voltages between different manufacturers.

Bosch PowerForAll The Bosch PowerForAll Tool range is a range of tools you can buy knowing that batteries are compatible with all tools in the range providing they are of the same voltage. eg 18v fits 18v, 12v (10.8v) fits 12v (10.8v) etc. Please also note that 10.8v is compatible with 12v vice versa as it is just a name change. Indego Lawnmowers also use the PowerForAll 18v battery but require a cover plate to be removed if changing.

PowerForAll has many advantages not least the fact that once you have a tool with a few batteries then there is no need to buy the more expensive versions with battery charger, you can just go ahead buy the much cheaper no battery versions!

So remember PowerForAll signifies complete battery compatibility throughout the range. There is however, one caveat to this, some of the very first older chargers will not charge the very latest batteries a battery charger upgrade will be required if you have a first generation charger. All batteries fit all tools however.

As of 2021 Bosch has licensed PowerForAll to other manufacturers whereby batteries between these manufacturers will be interchangeable.

Important You cannot use Bosch Pro (Blue) batteries in either 12v or 18v DIY (Green) products.

I use a petrol mower for the large rear lawn but this Bosch is perfect for three smaller, sloping lawns. It’s small, lightweight and easy to move. I have three Bosch 18 volt tools so this fits in well with the batteries. Although the 4Amp battery is recommended for this mower I’ve found that my 2.5 Amp manages to last 14 minutes, just long enough for the 3 lawns.

Very similar in use but easier to manoeuvre round the obstacles in my two small lawns and I needed a lightweight mower. Battery life (2.5Ah) just copes with both lawns but 18V system stalls in longer, wet grass. I have two other Bosch tools that use the same 18V battery which is why I didn’t pay extra for the 5Ah battery option.

I preferred to buy cordless to be more independent but I found myself hostage to the socket because I have to stop every minute to charge the 1.5 ah battery that I have for my drill, since until today I have not received the 2.5 ah battery free that I claimed with Bosch, but I also don’t know if it will make much difference in battery life. I believe that a battery from 4.0 ah is more efficient but then it costs a lot more! If it were possible I would swap it for one with rope for sure! In short: Don’t buy! Give preference for one corded and you won’t have stress!

Ragunathan 16/05/2023 15:44:10 The product build is good but its not suitable for a sizeable garden. Mine is 70 to 80m2 in dimension and it just drains the battery in half of the coverage. I have to recharge it again for another an hour or two get the rest of mowing done. Also not suitable for garden with overgrown tall grass as the battery would just grind to halt in 5 mins due to the hard work it has to do. I have to use a Bosch grass trimmer separately to reduce the size of the grass then use the mower for an even trim. Would highly recommend if the garden is small or medium and not for a heavy duty mowing purpose.

I am very disappointed that there is absolutely no commonality between the 18v blue and green batteries and don’t understand why there is’nt, Why should I need two sets of batteries and chargers when one would suffice?

Bosch have to be up there as one of the most trusted names in the world of electric lawnmowers, and when it comes to corded mowers they have few real competitors. Here we’ll take a look at their efforts in the sometimes dicey world of battery powered mowers and see what they have been able to deliver.

Firstly it’s important to note that although the price tag may be slightly eye watering, this is common among the best battery powered lawn mowers, in fact one of the factors that still holds them back from competing with their more powerful petrol equivalents is that they carry such a weighty price tag. None the less this is a highly functional mower, and like others in the ‘Rotak’ range it has a range of features to ensure you get the best mowing experience for your money.

With an ergonomically designed handle bar, with the option for holding the power control comfortably in either hand, there is little competition on the market for user comfort. Also like the others in its range this mower includes ‘grass combs’ to aid with edging, again a unique Bosch feature.

Looking specifically at the battery power on offer, this obviously increases the weight of the mower, but at 13kg it could be far worse, in fact there are corded mowers on the market which are heavier. In terms of performance, the amount of juice you’ll get from the battery varies, but you could be looking at up to 30 minutes of cutting time. Although this mower isn’t designed for large gardens that still doesn’t sound that great to us, it would be handy if a little more contingency were built-in, should you find yourself battling with a particularly stubborn area of grass for any reason. That said, the charge time is only 30 minutes, so you won’t have too long to wait should the battery run dry.

Conclusion

Whilst this mower is, like all Bosch lawn mowers, a perfect example of how to cut and roll the grass effectively and comfortably, it isn’t the greatest example of a battery-powered mower on the market. So unless you have a specific reason not to get a corded mower, we would suggest sticking to one of the other proven models within the Rotak range.
