Cordless Angle Grinder vs Corded for Woodworking. DeWALT battery operated grinder

Cordless Angle Grinder vs Corded for Woodworking

Tool manufacturers in recent years have really ramped up the RD in the cordless technologies department. This has been due to the hefty amount of investment and mining of lithium which is considered by many macroeconomists as the new gold.

There has been a monumental amount of this hot commodity coming out of the ground for industry use and a substantial amount is utilized by tool manufacturers each and every year for cordless tools.

That said, just how good are cordless tools like angle grinders with this relatively new lithium-ion age fueling them, and will further future advancements with battery technologies be the death of corded power tools?

Alright, so let’s get to it and finally put an end to the debate when choosing between a cordless angle grinder vs a corded grinder.

Which is the Best Cordless Angle Grinder?

Now that we’ve established that cordless grinders command a higher price tag than their corded counterparts, you’re probably wondering which cordless grinder on the market offers the best bang for your buck?

Let’s assume that you’re on the prowl for a regular run-of-the-mill 4 1/2-inch small angle grinder.

If you’re looking for the outright best angle grinder and your budget can be stretched a bit, look no further than the DeWALT Cordless FLEXVOLT 60V MAX Angle Grinder. This cordless grinder is so darn good that you’ll hardly ever endure the emotional torment of ever having to drag out another extension lead again.

The one reason this cordless angle grinder is able to complete with the majority of corded grinders on the market is the battery capacity it possesses. DeWALT’s Flexvolt 60V max battery delivers up to 4x the runtime when compared to the best competing lithium-ion batteries available.

Now mix all of the above together with DeWALT’s signature brushless motor that generates 9000 RPM, DeWALT’s E-Clutch electric brake system (to prevent kickback), and the added ability to use both 4-1/2-inch to 6-inch wheels, you can do no wrong with this impressive cordless angle grinder.

  • The top-dog among all other cordless grinders as this cordless grinder produces corded power tool performance.
  • Powered by DeWALT’s Flexvolt battery technology delivering enhanced fuel capacity for greater runtime.
  • Has the unique ability to alternate between a 4 1/2-inch wheel to a 6-inch wheel with the push of a button.
  • Next-level ergonomics as this cordless grinder is super comfortable and feels brilliantly balanced in hand.

Which is the Best Corded Angle Grinder?

This is probably one of the most popular small angle grinders available among both DIYers and professional contractors. The Makita 9557PBX1 4-1/2 Angle Grinder ticks all the boxes when it comes to both performance and durability. It is equipped with a powerful 7.5 amp motor that delivers 11,000 RPM.

Weighing a mere 4.5 lbs, the 9557PBX1 has been engineered with practicality in mind and will undoubtedly suffice when it comes to all of your cutting and grinding needs.

One of the first things you’ll likely notice about the Makita 9557PBX1 is the highly practical carry case this 4 1/2-inch comes with. Considering the fact that the majority of other angle grinders on the market come with damn near nothing and cost the same (or even more) than the 9557PBX1, this small angle grinder really is excellent value for money.

Throw in an additional five grinding wheels and the extra Makita diamond blade with this kit, and you’ve got yourself the best small angle grinder starter-kit money can buy.

  • Super reliable small angle grinder equipped with Makita’s 7.5 amp motor that thumps out over 11,000 RPM.
  • Durable metal carry case that houses the 4 1/2-inch grinder and the additional cutting and grinding wheels.
  • Nicely engineered paddle switch (extended switch setup) that has been ideally positioned for added comfort.
  • Fitted with a lock on/off mechanism to assist with continuous operation and also help with false starts.

Are Battery Powered Angle Grinders Any Good?

If you’d asked this same question around ten years ago, most in the know would proclaim that corded angle grinders are the king. Back then, cordless angle grinders were really only considered for less intensive DIY tasks around the house as the runtime was simply, meh.

Now in 2020, the average runtime of a cordless angle grinder has significantly increased where they almost make corded angle grinders optional.

These enhancements are due to exceptionally refined components like brushless motors, and of course, the improved battery capacity these tools possess thanks to lithium-ion technology.

While such breakthroughs have taken cordless power tools to a whole ‘nother level, they do have a substantial cost attached to them, and I mean so literally.

If you were today purchase one top-of-the-range DeWALT 60-volt cordless angle grinder with all the bells and whistles, you’ll likely not only be surprised with its performance but you’ll also be left with an ass like a broken cat flap when it comes time to pay up

Now, if you’re constantly using such a tool, it can be easily justifiable, and especially so if you’re the only one observing your monthly credit card statement.

But, if you’re only purchasing such an elaborate power tool for conducting the odd job another the house, it might become exceedingly difficult to legitimatize such a purchase when the fun police get wind of your antics.

And I know what you’re thinking; “That’s not my life, bro. That’s yours. I’m the boss in my household and I wear the pants. Matter of fact, where’s my beer at?!”. Well, to be honest, I once thought that too. In other words, this is one of those risk vs reward scenarios where you should likely proceed with caution.

Thankfully, this decision is entirely up to you.

In short, cordless angle grinders are incredibly beneficial due to the added degree of convenience they offer. They also have become just as functional and powerful as their corded counterparts, which makes them a fantastic choice for both the pros and DIYers. The only downside, this the price tag associated with them.

Are Cordless Angle Grinders Worth the Money?

This is kind of like asking a stripper if those fake tits of hers she purchased were really worth it or not? I mean, if it’s money spent on something you use routinely and it’s beneficial to your future success, isn’t it worth it? I know what Chastity would say.

All jokes, fake jugs, and stilettos aside, cordless angle grinders aren’t the most budget-friendly power tool you could likely purchase. That’s why I’d say if you’re bound to a strict budget and merely conducting a few random DIY tasks around the house in your spare time, it might be best to ignore the cordless alternatives and opt for a solid corded model.

Although, if you’ve got the financial freedom and are able to stretch the budget for the flexibility that a cordless angle grinder offers, maybe go for it. Soon enough, once other advanced battery technologies are produced and trickle down into the power tool industry, corded power tools will be obsolete.

A group of geniuses/nerds are currently working on some futuristic alternatives to help alleviate all of our blue-collar woes when it comes to whisking cumbersome power cords around. Such developments in the battery tech sector will utilize multiple new mediums to maximize battery storage capacity considerably.

With a significant amount of RD going into e verythin g from lithium-sulfur and nano-silicon batteries, we could be looking at a vast increase in battery efficiency in the near future. Almost by more than three times of the standard lithium-ion battery technology produces. So rest assured, science is soon coming to the rescue so we all can get rid of cords once and for all.

But for now, cordless angle grinders are about as good as it gets, and that’s still pretty damn good!

Are Angle Grinders Beginner Friendly?

For the most part, angle grinders are very beginner-friendly and straightforward power tools to use. The main underlying safety concern associated with angle grinders is the dreaded kickback.

A kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched or snagged rotating wheel, backing pad, or other accessories. This occurs when the grinder grabs the material rapidly stalling causing the angle grinder to uncontrollably forced in the opposite direction of the rotating wheel.

Kickbacks can happen when either cutting or grinding and mostly transpire when using the wrong wheel or operating the grinder at inappropriate speeds.

The other two safety concerns that may be a cause for alarm when utilizing an angle grinder are both airborne sparks and burst discs.

While sparks produced from an angle grinder when cutting or grinding metal can be troublesome to flammable materials like insulation, as an operator, if you’re wearing the correct PPE and using the angle grinder in a well-ventilated space, sparks generated when grinding or cutting shouldn’t be too much of a worry.

As for the latter, that’s much different. Having a cut-off wheel shatter or burst while using an angle grinder can be quite problematic. To prevent shattering cut-off wheel, always make sure you’re using the right size wheel for the stated power capacity of the angle grinder you’re using.

One safety tip I’d stress above all else when using an angle grinder is to leave the guard as is. Honestly, it’s not worth it. And yeah sure, while using an angle grinder without the wheel guard is freeing so to speak, it’s is seriously dangerous.

No matter how skilled you are, if you’re operating an angle grinder without a guard and a kickback occurs, you’ll be spending the better part of your afternoon in the emergency room, not the pub.

Overall, using an angle grinder, even if you’re a beginner, is very safe. Just remember to maintain a firm grip utilizing the side handle when operating the angle grinder and make use of the correct PPE at all times.

Oh, and never operate the grinder without a guard wheel. Simply stick to those basic safety rules and you’ll be a-ok.

In Conclusion

So now that you know the advantages of either power tool, you can now choose confidently between a cordless angle grinder and vs corded angle grinder.

Again, if you’re a complete beginner and just attempting a few DIY jobs around the house, go with the cheaper alternative and get yourself a corded angle grinder. Although, if you’ve got a few jobs on the go and want to maximize your productivity, bite the bullet and grab a cordless angle grinder.

So with all that mumbo jumbo said, hopefully, you’ve come to a viable conclusion in determining exactly the best course of action for all your grinding and cutting needs going forward.

DeWALT Cordless 20-Volt 4 1/2-in Angle Grinder. 8000 RPM. Side Handle. Bare Tool (battery not included) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 130.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Not Happy Still from Never even put a battery on it Bought this to use type 1 this cutting wheels for work, but it only comes with a type 27 (open-side) guard. Called DeWALT to get a type 1 guard. They gave me part #643772-00. Got this guard but it cannot be used on this tool because the guard uses a clamp-on fastener and the tool has a ratcheting release lever fastener. Called DeWALT again to see how to install this type 1 guard and was told to read the user’s manual. Called a factory service center. The guy there researched the part and the tool and said there is no type 1 guard made for this tool. I returned the tool and now I am looking for a tool that will do what I need to do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by romdos from Spindle lock button froze after 2-3 hours use [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Eats batteries, but good for the occasional grind-down or cut off. I used it to try to even up a small section of concrete and quickly found out that kind of thing is not a for a cordless device. The TERRIBLE thing about this device is the spindle lock button that keeps the disc from turning so you can change discs, suddenly froze up. Can’t push it in at all. Tried tapping it lightly, tried PB Blaster, nothing worked. The DeWALT site doesn’t even show the part on their exploded diagram so you can’t even buy it if it would come apart. I can’t recommend the quality or the manufacturer support. Gonna switch to Milwaukee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ConsumerX from Works well but a real battery hog. Used this to grind off some epoxy concrete crack sealant. I had two of the smaller DeWALT 20 volt batteries from previous DeWALT cordless purchases. This tool eats up the charges way faster than the others. I could not keep up with one charger and two batteries. Just yesterday, I received my order for a 2-pack of the larger DeWALT 20 volt batteries. That should solve my DIY needs. However, a contractor with serious, prolonged, grinding needs might want to look at the corded model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Film Pro from For a Cordless Grinder, this really can’t be Beat! All these dudes here with complaints(?) about this Grinder are full of.it ! I mean come on, hello? This is an Awesome CORDLESS Grinder! Ya got a Big Job in your Shop? So use one connected to 110. Like all DeWALT 20V tools, this one Rocks for outside Job Sites or when you don’t have access to your Generator. In my case, I build Movie Sets, often out on remote Locations, so this is a 100% must-have Tool in my Kit. And NO. I am NOT paid for my Opinion. IF you are ever in a Sound Stage in LA and can watch the Art Dept at work, you’ll see DeWALT tools all over the Set! No Brainer! ‘Nuff said!

Rated 4 out of 5 by PASs from A nice addition to my 20V max tool collection I already have a DeWALT 20V max drill and 1/4 inch driver set and recently got two additional 3.0Ah batteries so I decided to look for additional tools based on that battery system. I also have 2 DeWALT angle grinders, but they are corded and I wanted something I could grab and use quickly without the hassle of pulling power cords out. This was the perfect answer to all those requirements. Although it isn’t as strong or as fast (rpm) as the corded grinders it works great for small jobs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tom from Great tool ! I use this grinder for sharpening large, heavy blades on farm equipment. Great designed tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lestina from Great Grinder Grinder performs great. To get the most out of it, if used in heavy duty grinding though, you need a 4 amp battery. Great tool. Performs well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Gary from DeWALT 20v grinder Wished I would have done more research on this product. I absolutely love DeWALT, growing up as a child watching my father and grandfather work I knew DeWALT was and still is the most professional, most reliable battery powered equipment. I own many DeWALT 18 and now 20v Li power tools. Heck I even tossed the Echo weed trimmer for the DeWALT 20v brushless. So the problems I had with the 20v grinder is simple. It eats batteries. A 5aH battery will net you about 5 mins tops for grinding. A 1.5aH battery last about 2mins. I have 2 chargers in my shop so I didn’t see this as much of a problem till I realized the battery’s where too hot to charge after use. It takes about 15-20 mins for the batteries to cool down and take a charge. My second problem was the arbor shaft on mine was either out of balance or bent. Using a grinding wheel it would bounce a lot. And yes, it was installed correctly. I even changed out the grinding nuts with others to try and isolate the troubles. A cut off disc wouldn’t work either because of the vibration it would bounce around. I really wanted to like this as this is actually a 5” grinder. For bigger jobs I use a 7” 3m cubitron 2 disc and when they wear down I save them. Luck would have it the wheels would fit it. After day one with all the problems I took it back to Lowe’s and got the 4-1/2 DeWALT brushless and man is it worth the extra 40. I can get nearly 20 minutes of continuous grinding. DeWALT makes great tools. But if unless you are a hobbiest I would go with the better XR brushless. Hope this helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by phil 604 from Fantastic tool [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had my grinder about 5 months. I honestly don’t know how I have welded over 50 years without one. I have a DeWALT 120v. version that I truly love. I don’t get my 9″sidewinder out of the cabinet any more. I have 4 other DeWALT tools that use the same 20V. battery. But I think the grinder is my favorite. no cord to drag around, and lots of power.Thank you bor building quality tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by hammong from Great power and run-time from this angle grinder! I was a long-time user of the DeWALT 18V NiCad platform, and switched over to the 20V Max Li-Ion platform a few years back. Since then, I’ve acquired numerous tools. and they just keep getting better and better with the advancements in brushless motor and Li-Ion battery technology. The latest tool in my chest is the DeWALT Power Detect 4 1/2″ angle grinder. This grinder has substantially more power (double? more?) than the 20V non-brushless DCG412 that I also own. Not only is there more power, but the grinder runs cooler to the touch with the same level of pressure, and the extra 1000 RPM makes for faster polishing and light-touch flap disc surface finishing. I prefer the “old-style” clamping guard on the DCG412 to the click-adjustable DCG415W1.- but both do the job. I’m still on the fence about preference with regard to paddle-switch vs. trigger-switch grinders, but the paddle switch forces you to grip the grinder a little higher on the body, and is easier to operate with heavy gloves. Overall, this is a great grinder for my cut-off, polishing, and grinding work, and it works great with non-Power Detect 6 Ah/20V batteries, with are barely noticeable power decline in light use. The kit price seems like a solid deal considering it comes with both the 8 amp Fast Charger, a 8 aH battery, and a storage bag. The pieces priced separately are considerably more expensive!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Eduardotheedge from Strong and Smooth [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought it two months ago and I am very happy with it. I used to have the regular cordless grinder, which still works after 8 years, imagine how long this one is going to last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Daniel from Charger is 8Amps In case you are trying to figure it out. The yellow charger that comes with this has an output of 8 amps. My older chargers have an output of 2 amps. This means this charger will charge an 8AH battery in 1 hour.

Rated 5 out of 5 by THT from Excellent, light and powerful grinder. First battery was not good. DeWALT provided the replacement. Grinder is powerful enough for my applications, it is light and compact with sufficiently long battery life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by simpson from The battery life is longer than you would expect This grinder is made very well dropped it from a 20ft. lift and still works like new

Rated 5 out of 5 by Woody from Great item So far so good. This came with an 8ah battery that lasts plenty of time for my needs. If i was to use it for longer periods of time, I may have gotten the corded grinder. Very nice though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Clayaw13 from Plenty of long lasting power [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This grinder is built well and is strong enough to survive in the water tank building industry. It works well on smaller projects as well as rugged situations where moisture, dirt and grime are present
