Exmark Lazer Z Diesel Mower Increases Productivity And Comfort. Diesel zero turn mower
Exmark Lazer Z Diesel Mower Increases Productivity And Comfort

Exmark has revealed their new 2018 commercial mower models. The new Exmark Lazer Z commercial zero turn mower features a few new innovations, such as a 96″ UltraCut Flex Wing cutting deck and a Yanmar liquid-cooled diesel engine. The new model also features Exmark’s RED technology. We’ll get into what all of that means a bit later, but suffice it to say that the new Exmark mower packs more power, productivity, and durability into their new Lazer Z models. For landscapers who regularly mow larger areas, or have to mow in tougher conditions, the Exmark Lazer Z should turn a few heads this year.
What Exmark Has To Say About It
“The Lazer Z Diesel is the right tool to make quick work of the largest, toughest jobs. Capable of mowing in excess of 10-acres per hour, the 96-inch model is the most productive diesel mower Exmark has ever built. It also raises the bar for the cut quality, operator comfort, fuel efficiency and ease-of-use professionals can expect from a large zero-turn mower. As a result, the Lazer Z Diesel is the ideal choice for municipalities, universities, landscape contractors and others that need a highly productive, versatile, efficient and durable mower to maintain vast expanses of turf.”
Daryn Walters, Exmark Director Of Marketing
Exmark Lazer Z Innovations
For one thing, Exmark rethought the placement of the engine and radiator. This time around, they’ve placed both parts lower in the chassis. This not only increases handling and stability, but it couples the engine directly to the transmission. The Exmark Lazer Z design eliminates the need for drive belts, improving the efficiency of the powertrain. Theoretically, this equates to fewer service requirements, meaning a lower total cost of ownership as well as longer uptime.
The Exmark Lazer Z also incorporates an all-new UltraCut Flex Wing cutting deck system. This design features a 48″ center deck with two 24″ wing decks. Both wings can flex 20° upward and 15° downward for unmatched performance over uneven terrain. Using hydraulic lifts, the user can also fold up the wings, making loading, unloading, and storage easier. Despite having an 8′ cutting deck, the Exmark Lazer Z can fit into a 72″ trailer.
Exmark has also equipped the new diesel models with RED technology. An onboard intelligence system gives service alerts and updates, while also offering productivity statistics. RED tech also allows the 1.3-liter, liquid-cooled, Yanmar turbo-diesel engine to operate at a lower RPM without compromising quality or productivity. It also helps out with fuel efficiency. Additionally, the Lazer Z RED tech reduces exhaust emissions, achieving an EPA Tier 4 compliance rating.
Comfort Quality Improved Through Full Suspension
The 2018 Exmark Lazer Z line also improves upon the level of comfort that operators should expect to experience. Vibration due to bumpy terrain has been dampened through new additions to the design. Exmark has added isolation mounts under the seat and footrest. In addition to this, they have also provided the mower frame with three-dimensional vibration isolation. Wondering what that means, exactly?
We were wondering as well. Apparently, the patented three-dimensional iso mount system is the result of Exmark’s research into pressure mapping. By isolating the seat assembly from the mower frame, this system allows for 1/2″ vertical travel and 3/4″ lateral travel.
“Our research showed us that, if we could do a better job at isolating the driver from the oscillations of the zero-turn chassis, it would allow us to greatly reduce the driver’s felt vibration and overall fatigue over a work day. That’s why our patented Iso-mount system allows both vertical and lateral travel, providing isolation on both planes. When a driver hits a bump, or drops into a hole, it deadens the blow with three-dimensional absorption.”
John Swanson, Exmark Product Manager
The seat also features Exmark’s scissor link ball-bearing suspension system. This system provides 3″ of smooth, vertical travel. Exmark has designed the seat itself with its patented Elastomeric Vibration Control fabric, which eliminates the need for metal springs. This stretchy fabric itself provides up to 1-1/4″ of travel. Custom plush foam lines the top and back of the seat as well.
What we’ve gathered from all this is that, basically, you should NEVER feel excessive jolts and bumps when riding in an Exmark Lazer Z Mower.
Warranty Information
The Exmark Lazer Z Diesel mower includes a 5-year/2,000 hour warranty. There are no hour limitations for the first two years as well. Basically, for the first two years of ownership, you can mow for 8 hours a day, every day, and not have to worry about the expense of a serious breakdown.

Pros and Cons of Commercial Mower Fuel Choices

Running a professional landscaping business offers plenty of obstacles to overcome, from the right equipment to the right fuel. When the bottom line is at stake, every piece of information about efficiency of operation can make the difference between continued operations and an unsustainable business model. Just like with equipment, fuel choices can impact productivity, harmful emissions, and even noise pollution. At Scott’s Power Equipment, we know professional landscapers need to keep up to date on the best practices when it comes to creating better efficiency in their business operations. In that spirit, we’ve put together this short guide with some information about different types of fuel for commercial mowers. Read on for more about fuel and mowers, or head into one of our location in Missouri and Illinois. We serve Bridgeton, Arnold, and Wentzville, Missouri, as well as the entire Metro East area of Illinois.
Gasoline
The standard among commercial and personal mowers, gasoline is ever-present and easily acquired from local gas stations. Its convenient availability might be its best attribute, however. Gasoline engines are considered the low maintenance option when it comes to fuel, but this just isn’t true. The benefit here is mostly that gasoline engines are so common that most small engine repair shops only work on gasoline engines.
Gasoline-powered commercial mowers tend to have the lowest upfront cost, and because they’re so popular, there’s always some new technology that’s increasing their efficiency or reducing service intervals. If simplicity and convenience are your primary requirements for fuel, then gasoline is a great choice.
Diesel
Diesel fuel offers a few benefits for commercial mowers. Diesel engines are more efficient than their gasoline counterparts. This means your overall running cost for a mower will be lower. Service intervals are longer as well, which means less time between tuneups. This goes for engine components as well, including less oil and filter replacement, as well as a reduction in the overall wear the engine experiences. That means diesel mowers can last significantly longer than gasoline mowers.
These benefits come with a price: diesel mowers cost more! Their engines are just more expensive to make, and diesel fuel is more expensive than gasoline or else more difficult to acquire without consideration. However, if you’re running a business and use your commercial mower every day, the longer life and more efficient running cost will give you a better deal in the long run.
Propane
Propane mowers become more popular as gas increase. Their biggest benefit is in the clean-burning fuel that has little environmental impact — a growing concern among landscapers. Propane engines don’t experience the same carbon build-up as in gasoline engines, making them last significantly longer (though not as long as a well maintained diesel engine). Many municipalities, government agencies, colleges, and homeowners associations require contractors to use propane-burning lawn mowers as part of sustainability efforts, so using a propane mower could turn out to be a competitive advantage for acquiring new clients!
Refueling propane mowers is a quick and easy process, usually as simple as disconnecting one tank and slipping another one in. That means more uptime for your mower and little worry of spillage. While propane isn’t as ubiquitous as gasoline, most gas stations have propane available, so it’s easy to stock up at the beginning or end of the day. However, this isn’t always the case, and some propane mowers only accept tanks designed specifically for the mower, making it much more difficult to keep a working supply of fuel on hand.
Each type of commercial mower fuel type has its advantages and drawbacks, but as long as you consider the needs of your operation, you’ll be able to find what’s right for you. Reviews
I have had this mower for four seasons and what a great machine. I have been developing 17 acres so this mower has seen everything from taking down saplings to manicuring my lawn. I haven’t given it anything it can’t handle. I love the mulch-on demand to keep throwing g grass in window wells and flower beds. The only thing lacking is a powered way of changing to mulch and back. I love the blade speed but beware, it’s hard on blades. I plan on a new set every year. All of my equipment is Deere from compact tractors to utility farm machines and the Z997R measures up to the Deere name.
I had a commercial pro series 1999 Dixie Chopper with a 25 HP Koehler command pro that has approximately 2500 hours and is just started giving me some trouble. So I purchased the Z997R and really like the way it cuts. It has an excellent cut quality. It will go through thick heavy even wet grass with no problem. Its fast forward. I like the rear opening hood (even is removable with just two pins) the seat opens forward to give you wide open access to the engine and transmission. It has large oil and fuel filters with a very large hydraulic revivor plus its very easy to check the hydraulic fluid level. It will cut 6-8 hours on one tank of fuel. Traction seems to be better than my Dixie Chopper, will tear the grass if you turn fast and hard. I think its because of the big rear tires and weight, the tire are 26″ x 12″ which I like. Ok some of my dislikes. Its slow in reverse only 5 mph. The rear hood screen and coolers get clogged very quickly you have to clean them every time you mow or the hydraulics will overheat ( have not had that problem yet because I clean it every time) The hydraulic tank and the instrument cluster are one large plastic molded piece. It should have been two separate parts. The deck lift does not have any zerk fittings on any of the rotating parts. It squeaks every time its raised or lowered. I can hit it with spray lubricant and within 2 or 3 time cutting its squeaking again.
I had one the only problem with this machine is with a rear discharge the outside of the radiator becomes plugged up and the machine over heats. It needs a reversible fan to keep the radiator cleaned to prevent overheating.
I previously owned a 997 diesel Z-Trak mower with the Izusu diesel engine and 60″ side discharge mower deck. Thankfully John Deere went back to the Yanmar Diesel engines because it’s night and day difference. My new 997R with a 60″ side discharge multch on demand deck is so much quieter with the Yanmar engine and is much more powerful and responsive, I ordered the optional seat suspension which I would highly recommend for a larger operator like myself at 6’3″ and 300 #. You can’t stall this mower in thick grass and the operator station has been upgraded to more user friendly gauges and especially great are the button controls in the erogonomicaly correct designed handles, which raise the deck or stop the mower deck with the simple push with your thumb. Awesome feature ! I also suggest getting the rear bumper option which protects the engine cab completely. John Deere also brought the sides of the machine inward so you don’t rub the side of your machine against tree trucks any more like my old 997 did. nice feature too. Highly recommend this machine if you have a large lawn to mow with a lot of trees to mow around !!
Just replaced a diesel SCAG Turf Tiger with this thing. Amazing power behind the 72″ deck, no bogging in thick Bermuda. Even at 50-75% throttle I couldn’t provoke it to stall. Unbelievable power, actually. This thing is heavy at 1800-ish pounds, but it makes the ride smooth. Ordered mine with Kenda Executioner tires. So much torque on tap, I’d bet it would spin the tires and tear up grass with standard turf tires. Quiet, comfortable, powerful, responsive and love the hydraulic deck lift. Look forward to mowing my vineyard theses days. 🙂

Had my 148z since 2006. Been waiting on it to tear up so I can trade up. No such luck. 3rd Gravely in my family. Dad bought his last in 1965. Cut grass into the 90’s. Just a review for the lasting.
Lots of power, heavy duty construction, and great service from the folks at Triple C here in conway Ar. Twenty hours on it so far, and love it.
This mower makes a clean cut, is very easy to drive and is sturdy. The transaxles are heavy duty which is important when pulling a large leaf vacuum machine. The owner’s manual is not complete in that.
