We just finished testing one of this spring’s newest mowers, the Worx WG743, a competent 40-volt machine, nicely sized for small yards. After its test was complete, it made us realize why many homeowners are opting for these small-but-spunky, mid-voltage machines.

Types of Battery Mowers

Battery mowers come in three distinct types: those powered by motors in the range of 28- to 36 volts, such as these from Sun Joe and STIHL. Mid-voltage mowers in the 40- to 60-volt range, such as the Worx WG 743, reviewed here, and this one from Greenworks occupy the range from 40 to 60 volts. Larger-voltage mowers, such as these from Snapper and Oregon, operate at a much higher (and more powerful) voltage, in the range of 82 to 120 volts. They aim to provide performance closer to what a gas engine mower will deliver.

How the Mid-Voltage Worx WG 743 Performed

We were pleasantly surprised at the Worx’s work ethic. It appears to address what homeowners have wanted in a machine­ more appropriately sized and powered for small, well-maintained yards­. For many people, it may be that any gas engine mower is too much machine, and a corded model is a pain in the neck. Until recently, they didn’t have a good choice. Now, mid-voltage mowers, like the Worx, provide a third way.

We’re not saying this machine provides gas engine or corded performance. We ran it into some 6-inch-deep grass with oak leaves mixed in and it promptly stalled. But when we raised the deck to its full height of 4 inches and switched to the mower’s turbo setting, we managed to take care of that patch in three passes. And remember, this is a two-function mower. It mulches and bags; it doesn’t side discharge. So naturally, these mowers have a tough time in tall grass.

But what really stands out when you start mowing with the Worx is just how small and light it is. With a cutting diameter of 16 inches and a weight of about 35 pounds, the Worx feels more like a vacuum cleaner when you’re walking behind it than it does a typical walk-behind lawn mower. But you’ll be grateful for that lack of weight when you push it uphill or make long, plodding sidehill cuts, which we did (and do with every mower we test).

The Worx is typical of this second generation of battery mowers in that it makes provision for reduced motor rpm to deal with shorter or thinner grass. Running the motor at lower rpm reduces current drain from the battery and extends run time while reducing noise. To operate the mower at reduced rpm, twist the knob on the front of the mower’s deck to the Eco setting. When the grass gets thick or tall, stop, reach down and turn the dial to Turbo.

As for bagging, a small flap on the back of the 1.2-bushel grass bag alerts you when the bag is full. Airflow through the mesh bag keeps the flap closed, but as clippings build up and block airflow, some of the air is diverted out the back of the bag and lifts the flap—at least in theory. As anybody who routinely bags clippings will tell you, many factors affect bagging performance, such as grass density or leaves and other debris. In any case, the flap is still a good indicator.

Several other features combine to make the Worx a likable mid-voltage yard tool: single-lever deck height adjustment, a mid-fold handle that shrinks its storage volume, and one of the better handles we’ve seen on a grass bag, especially at this price.

As to improvements, we think the through-the-handle access to the bag is a bit awkward. You have to turn the bag sideways to lift it out. Likewise, we prefer a rear-located deck lift lever. Neither of these is a deal breaker, though. The Worx proves why many homeowners are looking at mid-voltage mowers for their small lawn.

For mowers, this means they generate less noise and perform better with less need for ongoing maintenance. Brushless motors can last significantly longer because they don’t have the same friction, which leads to tear-down, as their brushed motor counterparts.

How long do cordless electric Lawn Mowers last between charges?

Most cordless electric Lawn Mowers will last somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour, though there are a few critical variables to consider. The most common battery size is 40-volt, which frequently will last up to 40 minutes. The 40V mower works well on yards up to ½ an acre and has bagging and mulching capabilities for multiple uses. The battery lasts up to 45 minutes, and we love that there are over 40 Greenworks tools that utilize the same 40V battery. The deck can be adjusted to five positions ranging from 1-¼ inches to 3-⅜ inches.

On Amazon, the Greenworks G-MAX Cordless Lawn Mower is rated 4.4 out of 5 stars, based on over 3,000 reviews. It’s also listed as “Amazon’s Choice” for cordless electric Lawn Mowers. The mower is lightweight and easy to maneuver. The noise level is extremely low, but the battery is only average. While the mower works well on yards up to ½ an acre, the mower may struggle if you allow the grass to get too tall and thick. All-in-all, this is an excellent option if you have a smaller yard.

Sun Joe Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

Sun Joe, too, is all about providing eco-friendly lawn care solutions for consumers. It’s unfortunate when something as natural and beautiful as a green grass lawn becomes a conduit for pollution from gas-powered Lawn Mowers. Sun Joe is all about changing this narrative and solving this problem.

Do Sun Joe Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers Work Well?

The 40-volt Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower Kit includes the battery and quick charger and is Energy Star certified. The deck has six height positions ranging from 1.18 to 3.15 inches. Tacklife Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

Tacklife is a lesser-known brand, even among the electric mower market. They are less focused on lawn equipment than some of their competitors and more focused on general tools. They make everything from socket sets to money safes. Despite its broader FOCUS, the company is well regarded for making quality products, including its electric mowers.

The Tacklife Cordless Lawn Mower mower is designed to create a more comfortable mowing experience. The brushless motor makes less vibration and noise, reducing some of the physical and mental fatigue you expect from lawn mowing. Additionally, features such as multiple handle positions and the fast-fold function make the mower easy to use.

Do Tacklife Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers Work Well?

The 40-volt Tacklife mower utilizes a high-quality lithium battery, which provides a faster charge time and longer battery life. That said, the Tacklife Cordless Lawn Mower has a runtime of 30 to 40 minutes, which is shorter than some of its competitors. It’s also worth noting that a mulching accessory isn’t included, as it is with some competitor products. The deck has six height positions ranging from 0.98 to 2.95 inches.

On Amazon, the 40-volt Brushless Cordless Lawn Mower Kit is rated 4.3 out of 5 stars, based on a few hundred reviews. Detractors mention the weak battery life and that if you want to find a back-up battery, you may not be able to do so. A few also complained about the return policy. With all that considered, 84% of customers give the mower 4 or 5 stars. The mower is often recommended because it is lightweight and easy to use. It works well with smaller yards.

Worx Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

The Worx team gets it done with electric lawn garden tools, as well as power tools. Tacklife does a little of everything in the tools and hardware space, but Worx has a more focused approach. Like Greenworks, we appreciate that Worx offers a line-up of tools that can share the same 40-volt power source. If you wanted to do so, you could expand your tool inventory to include a chainsaw, trimmer, edger, blower, and mower that all use the same 40-volt power source.

Worx is all about innovation. They were one of the first to market companies to have a fully programmable Robotic Lawn Mower, which they call the Landroid. And suppose you aren’t quite ready for the idea of robot cutting your yard. In that case, they have other practical innovations such as the Jawsaw. a retractable blade chainsaw billed as safest on the market, and the Switchdriver. which enables to you use a rotating chuck to switch between drill driver.

If you think we got sidetracked, we did not. This is all-important because when you purchase a Worx cordless electric Lawn Mower, you will be purchasing one of the most innovative Lawn Mowers. Innovation is part of who Worx is, so it doesn’t even stop at the equipment. Speaking of innovation, our favorite Worx cordless electric Lawn Mower includes the patented intellicut technology, which adds power when the grass gets thick, and throttles back down to conserve battery when the grass isn’t as thick. The mower also includes a cut-to-edge design that enables it to get closer to fences and flowerbeds than other mowers can, which is a big deal. These mowers are excellent.

On Amazon, the Worx cordless electric Lawn Mower is rated 4.3 out of 5 stars, based on a few hundred reviews. A few detractors noted they would like longer battery life and a lower deck adjustment option. The deck height can be adjusted from 1 ½ inch to 4 inches. Most customers raved that they wished they had switched to an electric mower sooner. The Worx cordless electric Lawn Mower is innovative, and we recommend it because the battery is interchangeable with other Worx tools.

Snapper Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

The Snapper family of brands makes both residential and commercial products. While their heavy-duty equipment would be overkill for our yards, Snapper’s experience with durable commercial products is reflected in their more residential products.

The Snapper XD 82V MAX Cordless Electric Mower is built to be a little bit more durable than some of the other cordless electric mowers. It has a 19-inch steel mowing deck, where many electric mowers have a plastic deck, and an 82V power supply should help you cut right through thick grass.

Most detractors online lament that the mower doesn’t work as powerfully as a gas mower would in thick grass or rugged terrain. Most customers with average-sized lawns and landscapes love the mower, some even calling themselves “converts” from traditionally gas-powered mowers.

EGO Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

EGO was a first mover and innovator in the battery-powered lawn tool industry, so while their products are sometimes pricier than the competition, EGO makes quality mowers. Not only does it last up to 80 mins on a single charge, but the variable self-propel speed ranges from.9 MPH to 3.1 MPH, allowing for a comfortable pace as you make your way through your beautiful lawn.

Ideal for smaller gardens this sturdy, great value cordless mower is easy to put together, well thought out and simple to use. Thanks to a padded handle it’s comfortable to push, although it did feel a little short for our taller tester, and it’s light and easy to manoeuvre around trees and beds and borders. There are five cutting heights to choose from, adjusted with the simple lift of a lever and it offers the choice of collecting clippings in the 30 litre fabric grass bag or inserting the mulching plug and leaving them on the lawn to break down and feed the grass. It mows well but doesn’t like very long grass, with the battery cutting out occasionally but its long lasting brushless motor offers a a decent run time of 46 minutes and it charges in two hours. The Worx 40V Cordless Lawn Mower is the upgraded, more powerful model from this well-known tool brand. Now with 40V of power and the choice to specify higher amp hour batteries, you can get at least 35 minutes of uninterrupted lawn mowing joy (as many as 55 minutes with 4.0Ah batteries) – because let’s agree one of the worst things about mowing the lawn is the constant panic of cutting through the wire.

If you have been looking for a new mower, and have toyed with the idea of going cordless, then you will certainly want to pay attention. I was sent the Worx 40V cordless (also known as the Worx WG779E.2) to review earlier this summer and have tested it for a couple of months in my garden to see how it compares to the best lawn mowers around.

With a long and narrow garden to contend with, cordless is well suited to my plot, so I was keen to see if it could exceed expectations and be a good replacement for my corded model. Find out if we thought it made the cut.

Who will the Worx 40V Cordless Lawn Mower suit?

While the mower positions itself as being for small to medium gardens, with an impressive battery length it could be a great replacement for larger plots where corded access is a nightmare. Where petrol may have reined supreme in these spaces, cordless models like the Worx WG779E mean you can get great results no matter how far you are from a powerpoint and we much prefer battery powered to smelly (and polluting) petrol.

It still has lots to offer for small gardens too, being compact to carry and store and most of all, it is incredibly affordable at half the price of many well known cordless lawn mowers.

Set up and first impressions

On opening the box you are presented with a stylish black and orange lawn mower that matches the rest of the Worx range (and their batteries). To set up, you simply have to put the batteries on charge in the supplied dual-battery charger (which takes roughly four hours for the 4.0Ah pair of batteries) and attach the handle to the mower. This is very easy to do, and requires no tools as the handle fixes with easy-turn bolts.

The instructions weren’t really needed which was good as I would say these were the only drawback of the product. I get it – picture led instructions are the way most companies are going now, as they are more accessible and save printing several language variants. But I really could have benefitted from some annotations in places. There is a labelled diagram at the start however which helped me check all the parts and know what each was for.

With the batteries fully charged you are nearly ready to go. Just slot them in and attach the grass box to the back of the mower – easy. You then insert the safety key by the switch. This is a great feature that makes it a bit trickier for children to start the mower and means added protection from it starting while you are checking for blockages (although the instructions advise removing the batteries before ANY maintenance).

How easy is it to use the Worx 40V Cordless Lawn Mower?

The buttons to start the mower are clearly marked to show what order to press them in. First is the safety key, then the easy grip bar switch that is the length of the handle. The handle itself is soft to touch and can be adjusted to the height of the gardener.

Then, as expected, you push and walk to mow. A steady pace is best for even and neat mowing and there is a roller to leave those stripes we all love. My lawn is a bit bumpy so I didn’t get the perfect lines you might on a level space, but there was evidence of them in places. The 34cm wide unit is a popular sizing for mowers as it is wide enough to cover a medium space quickly, but also narrow enough for smaller areas.

It is easy to manoeuvre with medium-sized wheels that offer a good point to turn on. And as the mower is not too heavy, most users will find it easy to push and transport from where it is stored. This is aided by a compact body and a sturdy handle on the middle of the unit for carrying.

Corded vs cordless mower

Until fairly recently, your best option for a cordless mower was petrol and these are still favoured by many people who want to be able to mow in places where a power point is not available. However, petrol is not the best for the environment and depends on you having a supply ready to go. Cordless electric models were very expensive when they first came out, but with loads of options in the sub £250 price bracket, the market is far more competitive, the tech better and the battery life longer. For the best experience look for models with batteries that can be used in multiple tools and a long enough battery to cover your plot.

You can easily change the cutting height from two centimetres up to seven centimetres, using a handle by the front wheels. My lawn was a little overgrown before the first use, so to avoid battling with long grass, I set the mower to it’s highest length to trim it ahead of trying a lower grade. This was unnecessary based on use since – the mower makes light work of even dense couch grass and weeds that have been left to run wild.

One issue I did have on first use was grass collection. The 30 litre bag is ample for a medium plot and has a flap which remains down in use to show when the bag is full. This stayed down throughout my first mow and when I went to empty, it turned out the grass had not been going in. On closer inspection, there is a plastic safety insert behind the blade that is seemingly designed to neatly guide the grass into the bag and prevent you from putting your hand through to the cutting zone, but this seemed to be preventing collection. The troubleshooting notes in the instructions did mention this and that it could be removed, and since then I have had no problems. While the mower does not mention being suitable for mulching on the UK model I tested, it had neatly dispersed the grass it had not collected back onto the lawn. It was not noticeable enough to rake away, so I left it to mulch. The US version does come with a mulching plug for those who want to use one.

Cutting results

Having switched to this from a corded model, I am very impressed with the power. I tested the mower on both Turbo and Eco mode. Turbo does lead to a slightly easier cut, but the Eco mode is very capable of making a quick job of a messy lawn – and it extends the battery length too. My lawn is only about 40m 2 but I have managed four mows using a combination of Turbo and Eco and there is still a third of a battery left (if the indicator is to be trusted). It also features Intellicut to optimise the cut and create even results when switching from long to short grass or denser patches.

The cut-to-edge function works well and guides the grass into the reach of the blade. My lawn goes right up to the edge of the fence which can be tricky to cut to and it did a good job, leaving just a few longer stragglers that I can get with the strimmer or a pair of shears.

If you like a really short crop, this mower might not be for you. The lowest it goes is two centimetres – which is pretty standard – but I felt like to get that low on less even ground, I had to be really sure I was pushing the front of the mower down as I walked. This probably says more about my uneven lawn than the mower, but I have achieved a slightly neater cut with other models. Either way, it still certainly does the job and with ease, too.

Battery power: using Worx PowerShare system

Worx have built up an impressive selection of tools that can be powered by their 20V batteries. Most tools take just one 20V battery – we are talking their strimmer, leaf blower, handheld vacuum, drills and even a pressure washer – but the mowers use two for optimum run time.

The Worx WG779E.2 comes with a dual charger and two 20V batteries. Depending on where you buy it, these batteries will be either 2.0Ah or 4.0Ah and we were supplied with the 4.0Ah battery pair. Both will result in the same power, but the 4.0Ah battery will mean you can work at high power for longer.

The 4.0Ah also weighs more than the smaller, 2.0Ah so this might affect your decision if you are looking to powershare the battery with other Worx tools. While a heavier battery is not that noticeable in a mower, you might want to use the lighter 2.0Ah in things like cordless drills. However, the 4.0Ah is comparable in size and weight to the large batteries I have used on cordless drills from multiple brands and well worth the extra expense if you want the benefit or longer cutting times (a must for larger gardens).

The chargers will also run diagnostics on the battery and this is handy if for some reason the mower stops working. You can put the battery in the charger and a green light means it is charging (flashing) or fully charged (steady). A red light indicates an issue such as the battery overheating or being defective. If defective, the charger will attempt to repair the battery and continue to charge. Failing that, the Worx tech team are happy to help troubleshoot by phone.

What features and settings does the Worx 40V Cordless Lawn Mower have?

As mentioned before, you can use Turbo or Eco modes to cut your lawn. I have used both and find the Eco mode is sufficient for regular summer cuts. I think I might need Turbo for the first cut after winter and would use it for cutting meadow-like lawns. Having not tested this mower on wet grass, I can’t say how it performs, but based on the first mow (of a rather unruly lawn) I don’t think it will struggle too much.

The range of heights are just right. I can’t see me needing anything longer than the longest setting (7cm) and the lowest grade is what I tend to default to. Another nice feature is the grass bag indicator flap to tell you when the mower is full, although at 30 litre capacity, it has more than enough room for my small lawn. Finally, you can check the battery life whenever you like by pressing the charge indicators. As you can buy spare batteries, I would recommend investing in a couple of back-ups if you have a bigger garden, so that you never run out of juice. However, with an easy 40 minutes of cutting time from the 4.0Ah batteries, the average garden will definitely be covered, and bigger lawns won’t be a stretch – especially in Eco mode.
