Handy Manny Big Race

Handy Manny is one of AJ’s favorite shows. We’ve got a few episodes on my iPod and he watches them over and over again when we’re waiting in line at a store or in the waiting room of the doctor’s office.

I know how to keep my boy happy. The fact is, when AJ is entertained instead of whining that he wants to go home….we’re all happier. I love Playhouse Disney shows for the quality and entertainment factors. And AJ was drawn to Handy Manny the first time he saw him.

Manny is debuting a brand new show, Handy Manny Big Race, a special family-night presentation on the Disney Channel this Saturday, March 20 at 7pm/6 central.

AJ was excited to see the Big Race trailer and even more excited to see the new Handy Manny games on Disney.com:

What are your plans for this Saturday night? Why not make it a family night, whip up some of Handy Manny’s Stoplight Cupcakes or some yummy Energy Snack, sit back on the couch together, and enjoy the new show?

PS–Did you know that Manny is on ? And you can watch Handy Manny and other favorite Playhouse Disney shows on Playhouse Disney’s YouTube channel.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Playhouse Disney. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to get the word out about Handy Manny’s new show.

Good morning! Close out your day in regulation, please.

Four overtimes is too many

It feels unfair that the Panthers and Hurricanes have to play another hockey game Saturday night. The pair played seven full periods last night, ending their 8 p.m. local game around 2 a.m. with a 3-2 score in Florida’s favor. Matthew Tkachuk’s goal with just 12.7 seconds to play in the fourth overtime ended the sixth-longest game in NHL history.

The Panthers, man. This Eastern Conference finals opener was their fourth road overtime win of these playoffs, in which they’ve already slain the best regular-season team ever and a Leafs team that looked primed for a title shot. The 8 seed appears impervious to all negative conditions.

Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky deserves workers’ comp after registering 63 saves on 65 attempts. He was on the ice for nearly two and a half hours.

Thing is, this game almost ended at a normal-ish time, too, on Ryan Lomberg’s goal less than 3 minutes into the first overtime. Referees called off the goal due to goalie interference, and off we went on an hours-long adventure.

The Lakers blew it

Well, we still have a fantastic series. It might just end quicker than we thought.

The Nuggets are up 2-0 after a physical, grueling, 108-103 win that saw the Lakers up for most of the contest. Fatigue looked like it set in for LeBron James — who, despite his largesse, is 38 years old and entered the playoffs injured — and the Lakers by the end of the third quarter. Two sides of this:

  • For the Nuggets, this is confidence. Denver could’ve easily lost both of these games. The Lakers were within one possession in the final minute of both. Yet Denver leaves these two games looking like the stronger, more grounded team. Nikola Jokić put up another triple-double. Jamal Murray caught fire and scored 37. Everything worked, and Michael Malone’s rest adjustment for Jokić paid off.
  • The Lakers could’ve been up 2-0 but now face a must-win game Saturday. We should note that these teams only get one day off in between games, even as the teams shuffle between cities. Keep an eye on James and his minutes in Game 3.

Find a TV for this one Saturday. 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

Lance’s ‘substantial jump’ It’s been too long since we talked about the 49ers’ QB situation. Matt Barrows has an interesting story today about Trey Lance — the No. 3 overall pick who has lagged on the depth chart because of injuries — and his offseason workout program alongside none other than Patrick Mahomes. Lance supposedly has made a “substantial” jump in accuracy, according to private quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen. Brock Purdy is still expected to start, but what do you do with Lance? Also, don’t forget the Niners signed Sam Darnold this offseason. Feels like someone is getting traded.

Hello, San Diego MLS is adding an expansion franchise in San Diego, the league announced yesterday. The new ownership group — which includes Padres star Manny Machado — paid a reported 500 million expansion fee, an eye-popping sum emblematic of MLS’ bright financial future. (David Tepper paid a 325 million fee in 2019 for Charlotte FC.) Read this handy explainer for a full history of San Diego’s bid. Also, it appears the team will be called San Diego FC, though that isn’t official just yet.

San Francisco to win SB bid? Sources confirmed to The Athletic that San Francisco is expected to win hosting rights for Super Bowl 60 when the official vote happens next week. This comes just 10 years after Levi’s Stadium hosted Super Bowl 50 in 2016. The new bid is even more surprising if you remember all the logistical issues with Super Bowl 50, which saw poor grass mar the game. They’ve apparently sorted those issues out, though.

Bryson DeChambeau had a great day at Oak Hill yesterday, shooting a 4-under 66 to finish one shot off the lead. He’s clearly in a good place, away from the spotlight, as Brody Miller wrote last month.

That did not stop him from having one of the funnier moments in the opening round of the PGA Tournament: hitting fellow golfer Kenny Pigman with an errant shot. Bonk:

Eric Cole — playing in just his second major — is your Round 1 leader, although his day ended early thanks to darkness. He’ll tee off at 7 a.m. ET to finish his round.

He’s a wonderful story, a “mini-tour legend” as Justin Ray wrote in his notebook. Cole’s last actual win netted him 8,000 on the Minor League Golf Tour. Now he’s sharing the lead at the PGA Championship, on an extremely difficult course, no less.

Maybe we have a new guy to root for.
