How does the program work?

Effective November 1, 2019, consumers who purchase 2-stroke gasoline powered Husqvarna branded handheld products, including: chainsaws, blowers, hedge trimmers, pole saws and trimmers, for non-income producing personal use or household purposes, excluding commercial, agricultural, retail, industrial and rental usage types, can extend their product warranty from the standard 2 years to either a 3 year or 5 year limited consumer warranty.

To extend the warranty by 3 years to a total of 5 years:

The consumer will need to take only two steps: First, the consumer must purchase at least 96 fluid oz of Husqvarna brand pre-mixed fuel at the same time as the qualifying handheld product purchase and both purchases must be on the original product invoice/receipt. Second, the consumer must register their product online.

To extend the warranty by 1 year to a total of 3 years:

The consumer will need to take only two steps: First, the consumer must purchase at least 6 bottles of Husqvarna brand 2-stroke oil regardless of size and/or type at the same time as the qualifying handheld product purchase and both purchases must be on the original product invoice/receipt. Second, the consumer must register their product online.

For multiple units purchased:

Each qualifying handheld product purchased must have an accompanying amount of 2-stroke oil or pre-mixed fuel added to the original receipt in order to qualify. For example, if a consumer purchases a 455 rancher chainsaw and a 125B handheld blower and would like to have them both qualify for a 5 year limited warranty, they will need to purchase at least 192 fluid oz of pre-mixed fuel (96 fluid oz for the chainsaw and 96 fluid oz for the handheld blower). Consumers are required to keep their proof of purchase for the length of warranty should verification be needed. Husqvarna reserves the right to ask for this receipt prior to warranty work being performed.

How do I register a Husqvarna product?

In Canada, product registration must be completed by your local Husqvarna dealer where the product and/or oil and/or pre-mixed fuel was purchased, or online, to qualify for any extended warranty.

No You Should NOT Buy an Extended Warranty – 8 Reasons Why

I have gone over a decade without buying an extended warranty. Along the way, I learned a thing or two about the practice which seems to dominate the time and energies of associates and salespeople at many retail locations. The extended warranty market is big business. In fact, companies often outsource extended warranties to larger insurance companies. These companies then stuff these policies with limitations and conditions designed to make it more difficult to actually make a successful claim.

For the most part, manufacturer warranties sufficiently protect a tool with a factory warranty. This serves that crucial period of time in which it may break due to a defect in construction or a failure on the part of a battery or other significant mechanized or electrical part. But do you really need an extended warranty? And, more importantly, is it worth the additional cost? We think not. Here are 8 reasons why you don’t need to consider buying an extended warranty for your tools, appliances, or even your vehicle.

– If You Can Self-Insure, You Should NOT Buy an Extended Warranty

My number one reason for not buying extended warranties has to do with counting the cost. If you begin to factor in the odds, you’ll find that buying extended warranties simply doesn’t add up. After all, if the odds were that you’d make out like a bandit, the insurance companies that issue and back these warranties would raise the price further and correct for any discrepancy.

Instead, we recommend you “self-insure”. That’s right. DON’T buy ANY extended warranties on your products. Then, you can (at least mentally or on paper) add up all that money and put it into a virtual account for when a product actually does break. For me personally, I’ve “saved” over 7,500 in extended warranty offerings in the last 10 years. That means that I could literally take home a brand new refrigerator, have it break just one day after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, and still be ‘in the black’ by over 5,000. Most people find themselves in the black after just two to three years of denying extended warranties.

– Buying Extended Warranties That Don’t Cover What Breaks

I’ll never forget my one weak moment, allowing myself to get an extended warranty on a 2003 Jeep. Five years later, I had an issue. The Jeep was two years into my extended warranty period and well out of my manufacturer’s warranty. What broke that made buying an extended warranty finally worth it? The radio. What did my 700 “bumper to bumper” extended warranty get me?

The radio wasn’t covered, despite the fact that it simply stopped working. I had to buy my own replacement off eBay and was out an additional 100. The one time I thought I’d use my extended warranty, it failed to deliver. The lesson learned: Read the fine print.

– If the Product Breaks We’ll Fix It, No Hassle… Right.

There’s always a hassle when something breaks. Companies write extended warranties to do everything in their power to make sure they DON’T have to repair or replace your warrantied item. If they didn’t, they’d be out of business fast. From having to contact the third party, to waiting on hold, to dealing with people who speak English as a second language, some extended warranties seem designed to confuse, redirect, and frustrate the initial efforts of those attempting to make a claim.

In addition, the salesman offering the extended warranty doesn’t typically know firsthand how the claims process works. Manufacturers and retailers transfer extended warranties to the lowest bidder. Chances are, he’s never made a claim, nor would he buy it for himself. After all, his goal involves commissions, not warranty service.

– Buying Extended Warranties are “Cash Cows” for Retailers

The business model of buying extended warranties isn’t a thin markup model. Plenty of cash exists for everyone involved. The retailer makes a killing. In fact, extended warranties offer much more profit in nearly 90% of cases than that made on the actual sold item. This goes triple for electronics.

The salesperson selling the policy also typically gets a bonus or commission. And of course, the insurance company backing it makes money. All of this should give you a very clear picture that an extended warranty is NOT in the best interest of the end-user.

– The “Lemon” Pitch is a Scam

Many times, retailers may try to sell you on an extended warranty by including a built-in “lemon law” provision. If I need to repair my product three times, I get a new product or a store credit for the full purchase price. That’s not entirely true – and often not even a little true.

Lawyers write lemon laws very carefully. Oftentimes, the “counter” doesn’t start until the manufacturer’s warranty ends. In addition, it’s not “three repairs”, it’s “three identical repairs”. If you have a new problem, the counter resets. You can have any number of problems and the product may not actually qualify for replacement or credit.

– Buying Extended Warranties Protect Against High Repair Costs

Poppycock. We don’t believe the notion that buying an extended warranty protects you from high repair costs. This turns out to be pure fiction most of the time.

When dealing with an item such as a power tool, the extended warranty you buy can actually create a hassle by having the tool sent (or forcing you to go to) a repair shop that isn’t convenient and offers the lowest price for the most work. If you can actually shop around your local area, you may find that repairing that lawnmower or refrigerator costs less than the price of the extended warranty. That especially holds true when factoring in that not all of your products are going to break.

– The “Wear and Tear” Argument

Wear and tear have got to be in my top three list of excuses salespeople give me when attempting to sell me an extended warranty. The fact is, wear and tear are often NOT covered, and if it is, it’s covered under the manufacturer’s first year (or initial period) of coverage. For things like belts and brushes, you’re not likely to get them serviced as part of any warranty. But seriously, is your tool, appliance, or device going to really wear out in year one?

Really? I don’t think so. That would be a defect (or you’re misusing it, in which case another clause will come into play that will exclude you from warranty service). Want to have some fun? Ask the salesperson to tell you what parts are more than likely to wear out? Our guess is they will stare at you with a blank face, or make something up on the spot. They aren’t trained for this—most simply don’t know. What they ARE trained for is how to sell extended warranties and (hopefully) tell you how the product works and what features it has.

– Buying the “Two-Year” Three-Year Extended Warranty

When you buy an extended warranty, you often fall under the impression that this warranty covers your product the second you step out the door. In most (possibly all) cases that isn’t true. Think about it… there is a perfectly good manufacturer’s warranty on your product. Why would any sane retailer supersede that with their own warranty?

They wouldn’t. Your extended warranty won’t kick in until your manufacturer’s warranty expires. This is a dirty little secret in many plans, but it’s the way it works.

With that said, how likely is it that you’ll discover any major deficiencies in the manufacturer’s warranty period? Very likely. After all, most warranties don’t cover wear and tear, so if the tool works in year one, it’s likely it will beat the insurance odds and keep working for the next two years following as well (see our #1 point above). So that three-year warranty you paid for (and did the math on) is more than likely just two years of extra coverage.

Concluding Thoughts

Did this help you become more aware of the hassles and dangers of extended warranties? Look, there is value in having peace of mind about your purchases, but there is also good sense it not getting ripped off. For some, extended warranties add up to a “tax” that adds up to 30% on top of nearly every major purchase. In our minds, that’s simply ridiculous.

Self-insuring, and being more aware of what you are actually purchasing can result in better decisions all-around. At least we think so. Happy shopping!

What Does the Honda Warranty Cover?

Honda has built its name on the production of dependable cars over decades. Many drivers keep their Hondas long after the warranty expires. That’s encouraging news for those considering a Honda.

Honda provides comprehensive warranty coverage on every new vehicle so you can drive away confident you’re protected should you require planned or unplanned auto service. The factory warranties from Honda get divided into your basic, bumper-to-bumper coverage and a powertrain warranty. You can purchase additional warranties depending on the vehicle.

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty comes with every new Honda purchased. This warranty covers almost every component outside your Honda powertrain, including the battery, electrical components, air conditioning, infotainment system, and more. The warranty coverage lasts for whichever comes first, 36 months or 36,000 miles.

A few items have more limited coverage. The electronic key and its battery coverage last six months, as do the windshield wiper blades. You get limited coverage for 12 months or 12,000 miles on your wheel alignment and balancing. Your air conditioner’s refrigerant comes with two years or 24,000 miles of coverage.

Limited Powertrain Warranty

Your Honda powertrain includes the engine, transmission, transaxle, drivetrain, and restraint system. The powertrain covers all those mechanical parts responsible for powering your Honda. The powertrain warranty will cover the repair or replacement of components associated with these systems. The warranty for the Honda powertrain systems lasts for 60 months or 60,000 miles.

Specifically, the Honda powertrain warranty covers necessary refurbishing to the engine block, head, and every part within. Also covered are the timing gears, gaskets, the belt or chain used for cylinder timing, and cover, flywheel, valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, the entire exhaust system, all mounting brackets, control modules, cooling and gasoline pumps, seals, and gaskets.

On your transmission, the warranty covers the outer transmission hold and every part within, the torque converter, the transfer case and the parts within, the control module, seals, and gaskets.

If you have a front-wheel-drive Honda, the warranty covers the case for the drivetrain and the parts within, the driveshafts, CV-joints, hubs and bearings, seals, and gaskets. Rear-wheel-drive models have warranty coverage on the rear-differential case and the parts within, propeller shafts, U-joints, driveshafts, CV-joints, rear hubs and bearings, seals, and gaskets.

Replacement Parts Limited Warranty

Honda Genuine Parts have warranty coverage that extends from 12 months from the date purchased through the end of the New Vehicle Warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes last. The coverage for Replacement/Remanufactured Parts Limited Warranty covers only those parts deemed routine maintenance parts like brake pads, filters, spark plugs, etc., and only if they were improperly constructed. You must have documented proof of purchase as well.

Accessory Limited Warranty

If you installed Honda Genuine Accessories when you purchased your new Honda, those accessories have coverage for three years or 36,000 miles. This coverage applies to accessories purchased through Honda dealers, even if they were installed elsewhere.

Rust Perforation Limited Warranty

This warranty protects against corrosion, rust, and degradation of factory-installed body panels on your Honda vehicle. The warranty coverage lasts for up to five years with no mileage restriction. The warranty won’t cover body parts that were fixed, swapped out, or refurbished after the purchase of your Honda.

Tire Warranty

Your tire warranty comes from the tire manufacturer, not from Honda. You can search online for your tire warranty information from the tire manufacturer.

Roadside Assistance

Peace of mind comes with every Honda purchase through our 24-hour emergency roadside assistance plan. Coverage lasts for three years or 36,000 miles and covers jump starts, lockouts, mechanical and accident tows, winching, flat tire, and fuel delivery.

Honda Care Vehicle Service Contract (VSC) Plans

If your Honda has less than 36,000 miles and under three years old, you qualify for additional coverage through a VSC plan. If your Honda has less than 12,000 miles and under a year old, you are eligible for the Honda Care Maintenance plan. These plans are aftermarket warranties providing services, car rentals, and more.

Honda Care plans come in four levels. New vehicle coverage applies to all new Honda vehicles. A pre-owned vehicle plan covers all pre-owned cars, whether they are a Honda or other manufacturer bought as trade and re-sold by Honda. Certified additional coverage offers warranty protection on all certified pre-owned Honda vehicles. The powertrain VSC plan offers powertrain protection on pre-owned vehicles only.

Honda Care Sentinel Services

The Sentinel Services VSC offers warranty coverage through Honda Care on various items like routine oil changes, tire repair, key fob replacement, roadside assistance, concierge services, and a trip interruption benefit. Regular oil changes must be performed by a certified Honda technician at a Honda Express Service Center. The tire repair coverage will reimburse you up to 35 per tire with a maximum of one repair per tire. Roadside assistance covers up to five Honda vehicles registered to the same family address.

What Isn’t Covered By Your New Vehicle Limited Warranty

Honda’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty doesn’t cover normal wear and tear of any part, debris removal, scrubbing, or the addition of necessary fluid, unless they are required as part of a repair under warranty. Window glass has no coverage unless cracked, chipped, or scored. Honda won’t cover other cosmetic issues like paint unless the problem stems from a defect in material or workmanship.

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty wouldn’t cover broken or breakdown of parts or accessories if they were improperly maintained or installed. Any wrong or misapplication, unintentional damage, running low on oil, brake fluid, or coolant, modifications, altered odometer, racing, or the vehicle was deemed a complete loss would also void the warranty coverage.
