Buying guide for Best lawn mower covers

Reliable, high-quality lawn mowers make keeping your lawn healthy and neat much easier. However, they can be a significant investment, so you’ll want to take care of your mower in order to get the most from your machine for a long time to come. A lawn mower cover doesn’t cost too much, but it’s one of the easiest ways to keep your mower in good shape.

A mower cover is a necessity if you don’t have space in your garage or shed and have to store your mower outdoors. It protects the mower from rain, sunlight, and wind, so the components won’t break down when exposed to the elements. Even if you store your mower indoors, a cover keeps dirt and dust off the engine and other parts. You can find covers for both push and riding mowers, so there’s an option for nearly every model.

If you need a durable, well-made cover to protect your mower, determine the best type for your needs by identifying the right size, material, and other features. A good buying guide and quality recommendations can help too.

Covering your lawn mower can help prevent engine clogs by keeping grass clippings, twigs, and other debris from getting inside the components.

How to buy the best lawn mower cover

Why you need a lawn mower cover

Before you start shopping for a cover for your lawn mower, you might be wondering if you really need one.

If you’ve invested in an expensive riding mower or zero turn mower, you’ll definitely want to keep the machine in good working order. These machines can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, so you want to make sure that your mower lasts as long as possible. However, even if you have a less expensive reel mower, you don’t want to have to replace it frequently because you haven’t taken proper care of it.

A cover keeps dirt, dust, and grass clippings from getting inside the mower and damaging its components, so it continues to start smoothly and run properly. If you store your mower outdoors, it also offers protection from rain and the sun’s rays. It’s especially crucial to keep water out of the mower’s components because moisture can cause rust and other damage. A mower cover can also prevent rodents and other pests from chewing through wires or building nests inside the mower and doing serious damage.

Lawn mower cover types

These covers are available in two main types: indoor and outdoor.

Indoor mower covers are effective for mowers stored in a garage, shed, or other sheltered area. They work well to keep dirt, dust, and pests out of your mower, but they only provide minimal protection against moisture. If you use this type of cover on a mower that’s stored outdoors, it will likely deteriorate quickly and show signs of cracking, fraying or peeling.

Outdoor mower covers are suitable for use on mowers that are stored outside. They can stand up to the elements and even harsh weather conditions. In particular, they offer excellent water protection and can also provide UV and wind protection. These covers can last for many years.

Choosing the right size cover is essential if you want it to protect your mower adequately.

For simple reel mowers, most covers are one-size-fits-all. Many are even adjustable, so you can ensure that it’s as tight as it needs to be to protect the mower.

For a large riding mower or zero turn mower, you can find specific size options based on the size of the mower’s deck. Note the dimensions of any cover you’re considering to make sure that it will fit your particular model.

Lawn mower covers are made of several materials, including cotton, nylon, plastic, vinyl, and polyester. Where the mower will be stored determines the cover material that you need.

Indoor covers are usually made of less durable materials like cotton.

Outdoor covers must be more durable to withstand the elements. That’s why plastic, vinyl, nylon, and polyester are typically used for these covers. Some materials are treated to offer additional moisture, weather, and UV protection. These treatments increase the material’s durability so the cover will last even longer.

If you keep your lawn mower outdoors, opt for a light-colored cover. Light colors reflect sunlight, so the mower won’t get too hot.

What features should I look for in a lawn mower cover?

Denier rating

To determine how tough and durable a lawn mower cover is, check the material’s denier rating. This rating measures a fabric’s thickness and density, so you can get an idea of how strong it is. In general, the larger the number, the stronger the fabric. A 600-denier fabric is more durable than a 300-denier fabric.

The ratings include a number followed by a D. For example, some lightweight fabrics may have a denier rating of 100D. For a lawn mower cover, you typically want fabric that is at least 300D.

Securing: Most lawn mower covers have some type of mechanism to hold the fabric in place over the mower. For example, it might be an elastic or drawstring hem, tension straps, or even buckles.

Adjusting: Many lawn mower covers with a drawstring hem or tension straps are adjustable, so you can tighten them if necessary. That makes it easier to secure the cover tightly over the mower and make sure it won’t fall off.

It’s a good idea to look for a mower cover that has air vents. The vents allow the mower to air-dry in a humid environment or when exposed to moisture to prevent any of the mower’s parts from developing mold, mildew, or rust.

Storage bag

It’s helpful to have a place to store the cover when it isn’t on your mower in order to keep it clean and prevent damage. Some covers come with a storage pouch or bag that protects the cover from dirt or dust while you use your mower.

While the color doesn’t affect a lawn mower cover’s performance, some people choose a cover in a shade they like. Most mower covers are black, but you can find some in other shades like gray, silver, brown, beige, green, or blue.

Some lawn mower covers are made of marine-grade materials to make them highly waterproof and able to withstand the elements.

How much do lawn mower covers cost?

The most affordable lawn mower covers are those designed for reel mowers. They typically offer a universal fit and are made of polyester or vinyl. These covers generally cost between 10 and 20.

These lawn mower covers offer options for reel and riding mowers. The reel mower covers are made of higher-quality materials and provide excellent durability. The riding mower covers are generally made of less durable materials, so they’re best used for indoor storage. These covers typically cost between 20 and 40.

The most expensive lawn mower covers are designed for riding mowers. They’re made of highly durable, weather-resistant materials for indoor or outdoor use. Depending on the size, these covers usually cost between 40 and 99. Some covers for the largest riding mowers cost more than 100.

In areas that often experience strong winds, a mower cover with buckles is more secure and less likely to blow off.

  • Clean dirt and debris off your mower and dry it well before covering it. You don’t want the inside of the cover to get dirty because it can then transfer the dirt back to the mower. If the cover gets wet, it can also grow mold and mildew.
  • Secure the cover tightly to keep it from falling off. Use the securing mechanism to tighten the cover so it fits as snugly on the mower as possible. That can help prevent it from blowing off on windy days.

If you use your lawn mower regularly, a lightweight cover is your best option because it’s easy to remove and fold for storage.

Q. How long does a lawn mower cover last?

A. It depends on the type of cover and how well you take care of it. However, you can expect to get several years or more of use from most covers. Simple cloth covers generally won’t last as long as those made of more durable materials like nylon. Covers with a higher denier rating are also more likely to last.

Keep in mind that covers used outdoors will deteriorate more quickly than those used indoors due to the greater exposure to potentially damaging elements.

Q. What’s the best way to store a lawn mower?

A. Ideally, you should keep your mower in a clean, dry location. A garage or shed is an excellent place because it offers protection from the elements and harsh weather. You should still place a cover on your mower, however, because it can keep dirt, dust, debris, rodents, and other potentially damaging substances and critters from getting inside and damaging its components.

Q. What type of maintenance does the cover require?

A. You should periodically hose it down to remove any dirt, dust, pollen, or other debris. If you have a cloth lawn mower cover, you can toss it in the washer when it needs cleaning.

Lawn Mower Winter Storage – Mechanics top tips

Simple prep work now will save a lot of headaches later. It’s very important to clean old grass and debris from your mower. As grass decomposes it produces acid which eats away at the metal components of your mower.

So what is lawn mower winter storage? Mower winter storage is the practice of prepping the engine and body so that they are protected from the environment. The 6 basic steps to successful winter lawn mower storage include:

Most of the mowers that reach my workshop in the spring have problems associated with poor or no winter storage preparation.

If you take care to winterize your kit, you’ll have trouble-free recommissioning in the spring. Winter storage is a chore many owners skip and come spring they pay the price.

Getting small engine equipment winter prepped isn’t difficult and if need a little more help, check out the “Mower winterizing video”, it walks you through the process step by step – cleaning, cylinder protection, gas system preparation, and body protection.

Walk-behind mower or lawn tractor, the process is much similar. However, before working on a walk-behind mower, it’s best to disable your engine to prevent accidental starting.

lawn, mower, storage, best, covers, 2023

The process is as follows:

Disable Mower Engine

Remove – Remove the plug lead and turn off the gas to disable the mower.

Gas Off – Turn off-gas. Not all mowers have a gas valve. To help locate your fuel valve check out “Fuel valve location”.

Tools You’ll Need

You don’t need much in the way of tools:

  • Stiff brush
  • Paint scraper
  • Plug spanner
  • Small amount of engine oil
  • WD40 (1 can)
  • Tire pump (tractor)
  • Battery charger (tractor)
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Power washer (ideally)

Mower Cleaning

This is the dirty part, scraping and brushing to remove all the dry grass that would happily eat your mower over the winter months. Begin by removing any large clumps of grass and using soapy water, wash the surface area of your mower deck, engine, wheels, etc. I prefer not to use a garden hose or pressure washer, if possible, it forces water into cables and electrics causing problems later.

Turning Mower Over

With the top side clean, it’s time to turn your mower over, but there’s a wrong and a right side.

A mower should always be turned over with the air filter side facing upwards. If you need video help, you’ll find it here.

Deck Cleaning

If your mower is a riding mower, place a block under the front wheels and apply the brakes. This gives you enough room to reach under and clean the deck.

A paint scraper and stiff brush work best.

Both walk behind and lawn tractor mower decks are equipped with a useful garden hose connector on the deck.

After you’ve cleaned the heavy grass, turn your mower over, (plug wire and gas back on) connect your water hose and run the engine and blades to thoroughly clean the underside.

It’ makes a bit of a mess so be prepared, execute this step on the lawn.

Now run the engine with the water off, allow the engine to heat up, and spin the blades to drive off the excess water. That done, wipe down the mower, drying off any remaining water.

Allow the mower to dry out completely, (you may need to come back to this step later). Turn the mower over once more, spray the underside of the deck with WD40, this will protect against rust and dampness over the winter months. Take care not to spray any belts or pulleys directly.

Corrosion – Sadly this garden hose connector wasn’t overworked.

Jacking – Use a car jack to lift the front of your mower, place blocks of wood under the front wheels. Apply the brake and leave the jack under the mower for additional support.

Often finding somewhere to jack the mower can be a challenge, be careful of steering arms and the muffler. Alternatively, drive your mower onto a high curb.

Deck Cleaning – With the deck in the highest position, it’s not going to be comfortable, but it’s enough clearance to get the job done.

Grass Bag/box – It’s important to wash the grass bag or box. Matted grass blocks air from passing through the bag and this, in turn, stops grass filling.

A pressure washer is the best way to clean the bag, otherwise use a stiff brush and some soapy water. Allow the bag to dry completely before storing it for winter.

Treating The Gas

Bad gas is the number one reason for a lawnmower no-start. Gas goes stale and blocks up the gas system. How long gas stays fresh depends on factors such as the temperature stored at; where it’s stored; how full the gas tank/can is; the type of gas.

All mowers are affected, even new ones. Manufacturers won’t cover stale gas under your warranty. In lots of cases, cleaning will fix the problem, but some will need a new carburetor fitted, expensive! The easiest way to avoid problems with gas – add a fuel stabilizer. This is as easy as emptying a few drops of fluid into the fuel tank and operating the engine for a short time to mix it throughout the fuel system.

The gas stabilizer will keep your fuel fresh all winter, it will also work in another gas-powered kit, 2 stroke or 4. You can put it into your gas storage can also.

If you don’t want to use a fuel stabilizer, then simply drain the gas tank and run the engine until it stops. This isn’t as good as the stabilizer as a residue may remain in the system. All going well, adding some fresh gas in the spring, and you’re ready to mow. Regular gas is best for your small engine, ethanol e10 is fine but e15 is not, it will damage your engine as this fuel burns hotter. All ethanol fuels attract moisture and moisture corrodes the fuel system.

If you forget to drain the gas – cleaning will sometimes fix the problem but if the corrosion is too bad, you’ll need to replace the whole carburetor.

At the end of the season don’t forget to empty and clean your gas can, often it’s the cause of gas system contamination.

Draining – Draining out the gas at the end of the season will help prevent gumming of the gas system.

Stabilizer – But this is the guaranteed fix, dump a bottle of this into the gas tank and run the engine for 10 minutes – job done!

Treating The Cylinder

Most manufacturers recommend removing the spark plug and pouring a cap-full of engine oil into the cylinder. Turning (cranking) the engine over by hand coats the cylinder with oil, this prevents any moisture from turning into corrosion over the winter months.

Refitting the spark plug and turning over the engine by hand until resistance is felt, closes the valves, further helping to prevent dampness.

Here’s the process, for both tractor and walk-behind mowers.

Lawn Tractor

Protecting the cylinder is a simple two-step process, as follows:

1 – Remove your tractor mower spark plug and allow a cap full of oil to drain in.

2 – Crank over the engine to coat the cylinder, refit the plug, but not the plug wire, crank over the engine by hand (if you have access) until you feel resistance.

The valves are now closed.

Walk Behind

Protecting the cylinder is a simple two-step process, as follows:

1 – Remove your spark plug and pour a cap full of engine oil in.

2 – Crank over the engine, now fit the plug without plug wire and crank over the engine until you feel resistance. The valves are now closed.

Charge Battery

If you have a key start walk behind a mower or lawn tractor, you’ll have a battery and so we’ll need to prep it for winter. The battery needs some special attention, batteries don’t like to be totally discharged, it will often kill them. Most mower batteries fail over the winter months because temperatures drop and the voltage is allowed to drain away until totally flat.

The best solution is to store the battery somewhere warm, but we’ll need to use a battery charger to keep it in top condition. Batteries work best and last longer when their state of charge is maintained, so off-season charging is always advised.

I treated my own tractor mower last year to a new Smart charger, I bought the Noco Genius Smart charger, check it out on the “Small engine repair tools page”. I’m very happy with it so far, it’s simple to use and works on all battery types.

Add Body Coating

You won’t hurt your mower by spraying it with WD, it’s great at keeping dampness out of electrics. Spray down the center of the throttle and drive cables using the straw, stops cables from seizing over the winter. Coat the whole mower, engine, body, deck, wheels, handlebars you get the idea. The only areas to avoid are belts and pulleys. You may use a whole can, but it’s worth it.

Storing Your Mower

A mower should always be kept indoors, mowers that live outside have short lives. Electrical systems fail prematurely and body corrosion is accelerated. I understand for some they have no choice. If so, make sure the gas is drained and the body is clean and dry, if you have a battery, remove it and take it indoors. Don’t forget to coat the body with WD, that will help keep the dampness out.

No Garage – Storing your mower outdoors is not advisable. It will shorten the life of the mower and cost you lots in repair bills. If you don’t have a garage, then drain the gas and cover it with a breathable cover.

A plastic cover will cause condensation to build upon the mower and cause even more damage. Check out “Can riding mower get wet?”.

Indoors – This is the life! Even better if the garage is heated. Add a dust cover, now you’re really spoiling her.

Winterizing A Lawn Tractor Is A Little Extra Work

Riding mowers and lawn tractors are a little extra work, all of the above still applies but in addition, the tires need to be pumped and ideally, the chassis should be resting on blocks. This takes the weight off the tires and prevents flat spot damage. And if that sounds like a lot of work, simply park the mower on a heavy rubber mat.

Spray the whole mower with WD40, engine, body, and wheels. Cover down using a breathable cover, a plastic sheet will cause condensation – The Enemy.

When To Tune-up The Engine?

Lots of my customers ask me “when should I get my mower serviced?” The spring makes the most sense, machinery dislikes being idle. Lawn equipment will often start right up in the spring after the winter storage, but then stall and refuse to run. Check out the “Mower tune-up guide” here or check out the video here.

Greenworks GDG24LM33

Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

  • Easy to assemble and use
  • Comfortable padded handle
  • Choice of mulching or collecting clippings
  • Interchangeable battery with Greenworks 24V family

Ideal for smaller gardens this sturdy, great value cordless mower is easy to put together, well thought out and simple to use. Thanks to a padded handle it’s comfortable to push, although it did feel a little short for our taller tester, and it’s light and easy to manoeuvre around trees and beds and borders. There are five cutting heights to choose from, adjusted with the simple lift of a lever and it offers the choice of collecting clippings in the 30 litre fabric grass bag or inserting the mulching plug and leaving them on the lawn to break down and feed the grass. It mows well but doesn’t like very long grass, with the battery cutting out occasionally but its long lasting brushless motor offers a a decent run time of 46 minutes and it charges in two hours. Plus, as part of the Greenworks 24V family, both the battery and charger are interchangeable with all the other tools in the range, saving you money if you invest in more in the future. We awarded it a BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy for the best budget cordless mower in 2023.

Specs: Battery: charge time. 120 mins; run time. 46mins. Cutting: width. 33cm; height. 25-70mm. Grass box. 30 litre.
