Moving Tips. Ride on mower ramp

Moving Tips

There’s a good chance that you haven’t had to move your lawn mower since the day you bought it from the store. Do you happen to remember how well it was packed and secured on the day of the purchase?

The bad news is that you can’t just pack your lawn mower in bubble wrap and fit it inside a moving box. The good news is that transporting a lawn mower to a new home is not overly complicated – you just need to follow a few precautionary measures and, with a few simple packing and moving tips, you’ll have your piece of lawn equipment moved between the two homes in no time.

Read on to learn how to pack and move your lawn mower, including the best way to move a riding lawn mower when moving house.

How to prepare a lawn mower for moving

You can’t just load your lawn mower into a moving truck the way you left it right after you last worked with it. And you shouldn’t do it either for a number of safety reasons.

Before you can load a lawn mower into a moving truck, you’re going to need to prepare it properly for safe transportation.

Here are 4 simple steps to preparing a lawn mower for a move:

Step 1. Drain all liquids from the lawn mower

The very first thing you need to do when moving a lawn mower is to drain completely its gas tank and its oil tank and transfer those liquids into appropriate containers.

Gas and oil are hazardous materials that top the list of non-allowable items when moving home. And as you know well, professional movers cannot and will not transport dangerous items of any kind.

If you’re transporting your lawn mower on your own with a pick-up truck, a rental van or a trailer, then you also must make sure no gas or oil remains in your lawn care equipment. Gas is extremely combustible, especially when exposed to heat during a summer move, for example. Oil may leak out and make a huge mess inside the back of a moving vehicle.

Dispose of the lawn mower liquids in accordance with the local environmental regulations. Or you can give them to a neighbor who also owns lawn care equipment.

Step 2. Clean well your lawn mower

The second step to preparing a lawn mower for moving is to clean it from any remaining dirt and grass cuttings before loading it up on the moving truck. The idea, of course, is to prevent your other belongings from getting dirty and to keep the inside of the moving vehicle in decent condition.

moving, tips, ride, mower, ramp

Use a large sponge and water to wash your mower and pay special attention to its wheels and undercarriage.

Step 3. Remove all attachments and blades

For safety reasons, you’re going to need to remove the blades from your lawn mower before you load it up for transport. Consult the user’s manual of the machine if you’re not sure how to do it properly.

Use extra caution while handling the blades to avoid injuries. Use thick gloves while removing the cutting elements, then place the original protective covers over the sharp blades to secure them. Finally, wrap them up in large sheets of bubble wrap and pack them separately in a cardboard box.

Remove any other lawn mower attachments that can be safely removed and pack them separately.

Step 4. Disconnect the spark plug

The final step to preparing a lawn mower for a move is to disconnect its spark plug so that it can’t accidentally be started during transport. Even with its gas siphoned, a lawn mower can still be started in some cases because of the fuel fumes built-up in the tank.

Don’t take any risks! Just disconnect the spark plug (consult the user’s manual) of your mower, collapse its push handle and fix it to the equipment with some tape or a piece of string.

How to pack and load a lawn mower into a moving truck

Once you’ve completed the above preparation steps, the next packing and loading steps are relatively straightforward.

Here’s how to pack a lawn mower for a move, and then how to load it into a moving truck.

  • Step 1. Wrap all removed attachments from the machine in bubble wrap (in case of sharp edges or fragile elements) or in plain packing paper.
  • Step 2. Pack all detached parts in a separate box, seal it up and label it “LAWN MOWER PARTS”.
  • Step 3. Roll your push lawn mower up the loading ramp and into the back of the pick-up truck or rented moving van.
  • Step 4. Position the lawn mower with its wheels perpendicular to the wheels of the moving vehicle to minimize any movements during transport. Also, use straps or pieces of cord to secure the lawn equipment to the side of the truck and prevent any shifts altogether.
  • Step 5. Place a moving blanket over the mower and secure it with some packing tape. This step will cushion possible contacts with other household items and will keep your lawn equipment dust-free during the haul.

How to move a riding lawn mower

All the preparation, packing and loading steps explain how to transport a push lawn mower. If you own a ride-on lawn mower, then the steps to moving it to a new home will be different.

Caution: The best way to move your riding lawn mower is to transport it safely in a trailer. The problem with loading riding mowers and lawn tractors into the bed of a pick-up truck or a rental van can be rather dangerous if not done properly.

Step 1. Purchase the right type of loading ramps

Remember that lawn mowers with cutting decks have very low ground clearance. This is why you’ll need to need arched ramps (not straight ones) so that your riding mower can clear the lip of your truck’s tailgate without any damage to the lawn equipment or the moving vehicle.

Also, keep in mind that the center of gravity of most riding lawn mowers is higher which could lead to the mower tipping back when it’s going up a steep incline. So, make sure the loading ramps you buy are long enough to eliminate any tipping risks.

Step 2. Secure the ramps on the truck

This step is crucial!

Unfold the loading ramps and position the plate ends on the edge of the tailgate. Then, use tie-down straps to secure the ramps to the moving truck.

Make absolutely sure that the straps are holding the ramps in place so that no loading accidents occur.

Step 3. Load the riding lawn mower

The safest way to load your riding mower into the truck is to drive it backward into the bed of the vehicle. Why? The heaviest part of the ride-on mower will be kept lower and that will eliminate any risks of the mower/tractor tipping over or flipping while going up the ramps.

If you’re not comfortable riding your mower backward, then drive it forward up the ramps and into the bed of the truck. Do it in low gear and do not stop and start up again midway on the ramps – if you must stop on the ramps, then let your mower roll all the way back to its starting position and try again.

Step 4. Secure the mower onto the truck

Once you’ve loaded the riding mower into the truck, set its parking brake and use tie-down straps to secure it for transport. During the haul itself, stop periodically to check that the tie-down straps have not loosed up and to ensure that the mower is secured.

Top 10 Lawn Mower Ramps: Pros Cons Included

Purchasing any type of equipment can be overwhelming if you do not have sufficient knowledge. While purchasing ramps, especially, people do not invest that much thought in the buying process. This can be very harmful. Do you think I am exaggerating? Well, it is true. Overspending on ramps with a low value for money can be harmful to your and any low-quality ramp can collapse while using or poor craftsmanship can injure you.

Points to consider so you don’t sweat blood before making a purchase.

Lawnmower ramps are an essential piece of equipment especially for our gardener fellas who have to mow their lawn now and again. Here are a few points which you must consider before purchasing your set of lawn mower ramps.

  • Vehicles like tractors and grass mowers have low ground clearance. This means that the gap between the vehicle’s base and the ground is very small. To tackle this, look for an arched ramp so the loading procedure would not damage the ramp or the vehicle.
  • Lawnmowers are the kind of vehicles that have a non-uniform weight distribution. This problem occurs in many other automobiles, as well. To deal with this problem, purchase one with a higher load capacity so even there is a higher weight on one side than the other, the ramp would not collapse.
  • The center of gravity is very important while transporting vehicles. Vehicles like lawnmowers and tractors have a comparatively higher center of gravity despite having a low ground clearance. Lawnmower ramps are usually longer which makes the loading easy.
  • Aluminum ramps are always a winner either you look for lawn mower ramps or ramps for other automobiles. The natural protective coating on aluminum prevents the metal from oxidizing hence avoid any wear and tear. Aluminum is a lightweight metal as compared to steel or wood. This makes it suitable for ramps as it allows easy handling and transporting.

You must know what are you looking for to get the right piece of equipment. Here is an easy way to deal with the daunting process of purchasing the right equipment:The 4Ws

What material are you looking for?

Aluminum is the best based on its multiple benefits but you can always opt for any other material based on the kind of environment you work in and your handling abilities.

Why do you need a set of ramps?

Ramps are used for various purposes. Loading/unloading of vehicles and wheelchairs, and even for houses and sheds too. The type of ramp that is to be used depends on your use. Loading wheelchairs require different types of ramps as compared to heavy-duty vehicles.

Where are you going to use them?

The ground and surroundings also matter while purchasing a ramp. Ramps are usually used outdoors which means that the ramp should be made of weather-resistant material. Steel is a good choice but it can heavy and hard to lift whereas wood can corrode in wet conditions. Hence, aluminum works the best.

Who is going to handle the ramp?

Believe me or not, it matters. Look for user-friendly ramps if you are newbie then handling a ramp might injure your wrist or back trying to lift the ramp. Also setting the ramps require some skills.
